ArchAngel Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I would really like to know what info you have to backup these statements. Well, I'm not very computer savvy but according to a member of the geek squad at best buy overclocking can lead to the dreaded blue screen of death. First time he had that prob. Anyhow, if you do overclock you really should'nt go above 10%...also from the geek squad...but then I could be wrong... An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
Shrubbo Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Could you explain to me how to use it? I dont wanna read 7 pages of posts on that link if its not neccessary. I have a quad core 64bit vista system.... Unless you want to do it every time you start the game... ....Start game and get in mission ....alt+tab out ....start task manager ....find dcs.exe in processes ....right click dcs.exe and set affinity to all your cores ....get back into game and enjoy a major fps boost (Vista only) ....then you really want to read that thread... really. i9-9900K,Z390 Aorus Master, 32GB GSkill Trident F4-3600 DDR4, ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti, Oculus Rift S. Thrustmaster Warthog T&S, TPR Pedals.
GunnDawg Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I think I got it down, just run which ever .cmd file suits me from the install dir? in my case "DSCAff_4core__SP.cmd" if for some reason I dont like it...can I run the original .exe files? also what is the "DSCAff_4core_i7_SP.cmd" version of it?
Purg Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Bs works well with vista 64. However, there area a couple things you might want to take into consideration such as what type of vid card you have and remember, bs uses quite a bit of memory so I would suggest you get, at the minimum 5 gigs of ram. Are you sure about that? I found that BS uses ~600MB on my machine, which, for a high fidelity sim is tiny.
ArchAngel Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 I swear I read somewhere in this forum that BS requires 5 gigs of ram minimum. That's why I upgraded from 4 gigs to 8 gigs. Or did I just waste money? An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.

The guy you talked to gave you some bad information. I've never dealt with those guys much but I've heard they're not the most knowledgable techs in the world. Lots of people overclock a core2 duo from 2.8Ghz to 4Ghz or even higher and are quite stable. It does take some knowledge to learn how to do it right and yes it can lead to the BSOD but that's just part of the process. If you get a BSOD it just means you have to back off a bit on one or more parameters until you get it running reliably. -- CoolHand
Prophet Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 Maybe 5 Gigs of hard drive memory... ? And I think that would be pushing it. Actually getting 5 GB of ram would hinder your performance. The only way would be 2 2GB and 1 1GB, or 1 2GB and 3 1GB. All of which would not use dual channel. And dont overclocking a bad idea? ArchAngel, you do realize the competency level of the people at Geek Squad is fairly low right? I wouldnt even allow them the opportunity to look at my computer, let alone touch it. 10%? My E6600 stock is 2.4GHz I have it running @ 3.4GHz. My new i7 920 is stock 2.66GHz, I have it running 3.8GHz. My 4870 1GB is also overclocked by more than 10%. 10%.... pffft. Sure if you dont know what you are doing maybe. But then again, I dont recommend for anyone to do ANYTHING, in relation to ANYTHING, if they dont know what they are doing. Overclocking is free money. There is not a single person that I dont suggest to investigate overclocking do some research to learn how to do it safely. My i7 920 cost $300, and is running faster than the i7 965 at stock which sells for $1300.
Mxyzpylk Posted December 24, 2008 Posted December 24, 2008 The Geek Squad. I would not put much stock in what most of them tell you. I'm not a big overclocker. I increased the multiplier to 15 which brought my 9950BE up to 3.0 Ghz. It could easily go higher If I wanted it to. I did just switch my 4 1GB sticks of memory for 4 2GB sticks. Memory is so cheap now. After the rebates, it cost me $50.00 for 8GB
ArchAngel Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 Well, guess I learned something new. Thanx for the info. Btw, Prophet you are absolutely right. Since I increased my ram to 8 gigs my puter takes damn near forever to boot. Should I back off on the ram? skypirate Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 I'm running the BS with Vista 32 and RAM=4 Gigs... After I started implementing the affinity to the second core in the system as well everything runs like baby [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]Regards!

My guess is your probably doing a memory test everytime you boot which with 8 megs might take some time. I usually turn that off in the bios as that's really overkill these days, especially when you have a lot of memory. -- CoolHand
ArchAngel Posted December 25, 2008 Posted December 25, 2008 I'll give that a try coolhand. Thanx. Now where do I find someone who is competent enough to handle my puter,,,hmmm... An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
