I'm about to pull the string and get the Gunfighter Mk3 ultimate  with the 200mm extension but have a few questions before I do so. I'll be buying the Mk3-L ultimate and was wondering if it ships with the #50 springs already installed or is it something I have to do myself. If i do have to install the heavy spring, is it 1x 50 per cam or 2x 50 per cam? I've been flying the Warthog since it was released and am not a fan of the "hard" center. Does the default Mk3 ultimate  already have a soft center or a change of cams upon arrival also necessary to get this? Thanks in advance to anybody who could answer these few questions for me. It is very much appreciated.

No it does not ship with the #50 pre installed, you will want to install it. What combination of springs you use will be up to you. I myself use a #50 and I believe a #30 on each axis. Two #50 on each axis might be a bit extreme.

Same with cams, you can experiment with each to get the feel you desire. It really is very dependent on the individual's tastes. The design of the stick really makes changing them out fairly simple. I really do not recall what cams I ended up using in mine.

Can’t remember the pre installed cams either, but I believe it was hard center and I swapped them immediately for avia s. Just yesterday switched to space s for helo flying. It’s really not difficult to switch. Remove the springs and one screw per cam. Make a photo before switching so you know the direction of screw and nut (different on both cams because of clearance issues).

Regarding the spring load, I believe to remember one must not exceed a load of something like #80 per cam in total. I think 70 is a good starting point for 20cm and the ultimate grip.

for the GFIII - although some folks have put 2 x 50's in for each axis, I remember reading the max recommended is a 40 & 50 together per axis

The ultimate is a heavy grip. with the 20cm extension, expect to get some bouncing back / forth of the stick when centering, even with heavy springs and tightened clutches 🙂

I am using a 50 and 30 on each with tightened clutches, and after some short time, it feels really nice.

How is it at centering with the tightened clutches? Also what cams?

It returns pretty smooth... i think the cams i am using is called the Aviation... but it took some time with adjusting the clutches, so patience is a virtue 😉

Yeah if I put much of the clutches into it mine just will not return to center perfectly. This is with the Avia S (soft center) cams and a #50 combined with #40 spring on each axis. I don't recall ever trying the Avia H (hard center) cams but think I might have and did not care for it.

I ran a #50  and #30 on mine with 200mm extension. Tried the hard center cams and didn’t care much for them. I ended up shortening the 200mm extension and then machining a couple of my own and actually settled on about 65mm for my preferred sweet spot, with #30 singles on each axis. The 200mm with the two springs on each axis still felt really soft but I always had issues with the extension staying tight enough to the base. It would always loosen up and you could hear the springs rubbing, even with the rubber tubing around them. Since dropping down to the short extension I still feel like there is still plenty of throw in the stick ( I didn’t care for it with no extension), but haven had any connection issues since, no noise, nothing. Just silky smooth like it should be with soft center cams and just enough tension on the dampeners so when I pull the stick to full deflection and let go it gets back to center and stops without the stick bouncing back and forth a bunch.

I did end up going through the whole base and found a few screws that weren’t as tight as they should be, just some food for thought if you hear and clunking or clicking noises. The gunfighter base should be dead silent.

Aviation Soft cams (soft center) were installed by default in my GF3. I also have the 200mm extension and use something like #50 + #20 (or #30?) springs on each axis, with the base solidly mounted to my cockpit.

The spring swap is fairly easy and straightforward. The base is clearly designed to be disassembled and reassembled by the end-user.

After tinkering a bit and getting comfortable opening it up and reassembling, i settled on #50 and a #30 on each axis - factory had just one 20 on each axis and with the 20cm extension and clutches loosened the thing was pretty much a noodle lol. I initially had it with both dry clutches tightened about 2 turns from max but have since loosened the clutches a bit and now its good with a perfect oscillation around center. Im using the Avia-S cams. Cant say enough good things about this stick.

Yeah lol I have never quite understood why VKB does that with the springs, but I guess it simplifies things for them by only putting one each #20s spring on each axis no matter the product ordered. Folks are going to end up likely changing them anyway.

I really wish I could use stronger springs on mine but don't want it to break. I think I am using 50 and 40 and was too scared to do the two 50's, I haven't checked in a long time though, A stronger spring setup with the 200mm extension would be very welcome. It's far to easy to move the stick imo. Maybe I aught to try some different cams.
