dresoccer4 Posted August 10, 2022 Posted August 10, 2022 sometimes when attempting to engage altitude hold, i press the button but nothing happens, as shown in the screenshot. the waypoint follow mode DOES work though. so does attitude. why is this? null Acer Predator Triton 700 || i7-7700HQ || 512GB SSD || 32GB RAM || GTX1080 Max-Q || FFB II and Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle || All DCS Modules
MARLAN_ Posted August 10, 2022 Posted August 10, 2022 Make sure your stick is centered. You may need to recalibrate your stick, or add some dead zones. TimRobertsen Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 This happens all the time for me. Seems like a bug. I press hold (via keyboard): and sometimes it holds, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it lags, sometimes not. It's been like this for a year or so, not sure why it happens. First become an aviator, then become a terminator
rob10 Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 2 things to try: make sure you are in fairly level flight when you try to engage it, and HOLD the UFC button for a second to get it to "take". If you do a quick tap on it, it'll visually press on screen, but in DCS sometimes buttons require a slightly longer hold to actually be notice. I'm not talking a "long press", just a pause with it held. I have a button box and use AutoHotKey to send commands and I have it hold the button for 150 milliseconds to ensure a consistent press.
markom Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 I could be wrong (mostly because I never flew real F/A-18, nor read the real manuals), but most autopilots I've flown IRL will not altitude hold if your VS is beyond some value close to 0. In my little time in DCS's F/A-18 this seems to be the case as well. It won't hold for me if my V/S is beyond something close to 1% of the altitude where I am asking it to hold. I usually make sure my plane is stable and trimmed at altitude and only then tell it to hold. Works every time that way. If plane is climbing or descending, about 50% of the time, I'll get AUTO PILOT warning. I am not sure if this is correct behavior or not, auto pilot is not magic. It won't "stabilize" an "unstable" aircraft for you. That's pilot's job.
Ephedrin Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 The DCS Hornet‘s AP engages reliably and even catches the altitude if you‘re in a climb or descent. It will oscillate around that altitude a while though. if it doesn‘t work, as said above, check your hardware for proper centering. Almost always a slight null zone is required.
markom Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Oh, I am 100% positive the hardware is centered and I get it not catching *all the time*. I suppose it's time for a track...
CBStu Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Putting a bit of dead zone in my stick has fixed it for me. I often climb at about 5 deg for quite a while to get to altitude. When I see I am getting close to my desired altitude, I hover my mouse pointer over the balt button and hit it as soon as I see 25,000 for instance. As Ephedrin says, it will oscillate up and down a couple hundred for maybe 3 cycles before it settles but I can live w/ that.
