IFOLS (Meatball) and ILS subtle difference

Recommended Posts

Next time you fire DCS and try to shoot an ILS Approach there are subtle differences you need to be aware of

Experienced real pilots get them confused also so you are not alone

IFOLS gives what plane actually is Above Glideslope, On Glideslope, Below Glideslope

ILS gives you a "fly to" indication

For example IFOLS says you are below glideslope do something, ILS says you are below glideslope gives you a fly up indication to get to on glideslope

They both give the same information but ILS takes one step further by giving you a fly indication to get on glideslope

I've always viewed the ICLS as a tool to get you on glideslope and on centerline at the start of the groove, then from 3/4 mile I completely ignore ICLS and fly the ball. Any disagreement from the needles and ball end up being inconsequential in my experience.

Not exactly because ICLS in hornet is raw data rather than flight director, so you have to be proactive instead of being reactive. On the other hand ACLS is a flight director and only thing you have to do is put the VVI over ACLS symbolgy.

and on top of that...  ICLS needles that look like needles are called 'bullseye' ,   ACLS tadpole that looks like bullseye is called 'needles', lol ...  go figure.    Then again, I might be confused 🙃
