TonyP Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I'm having difficulties in getting a lock on a moving target. I hit the button to activate the Ground Moving Target on the PUI 800, I've got the target between the gates on the Shkval but I can't seem to get a lock that holds the gate on the target when it moves. The Laser switch is on. I'm trying to hit a AAA Vulcan as it moves down a road, but can't hold the lock (gate) on the moving vehicle.
Zembla Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Maybe it's because your gate is too big? You can decrease the size of those. If it's failing to lock a moving object, what you can try is slewing the designator over the area your target will be moving through in a matter of split seconds. Once it does move through the area, you can push the designate button, it's a matter of timing rather than accuracy now. Once the Shkval picks up the movement of the target, you can reposition the TD as you please over the target by holding the designate button together with any TD movement keys. Practice makes art, or so they say here in Belgium :p -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!

What is TD, and what do you mean by the "designate button", is that the lock button? Thanks!
Zembla Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 TD stands for target designation, the gates in other words. They form a sort of box, in other games (a.o. LOMAC this box is referred to as the TD box, or the target designation box, unless I misremember of course :)) The designate button is the lock button yes. So, to avoid any confusion, designating and locking are pretty much synonymous. Designation of a target as such then refers to moving the gates over the target and pressing the lock button. -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!

Well, in Black Shark there is one button which is lock and another which is designate (and uncage) skhval. So I'm sure it helps if you use the appropriate name, as sometimes you use one, and sometimes the other.

graywo1fg Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 if you turn off the autopilot heading hold then automatic turn on target wont work? Majesco Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 i always turn off Autopilot Heading Hold while flying, just activate it when attacking targets

The "designate"-ing of the Shkval, just activates/uncages it, it doesn't lock/designate anything unless you press it in conjuction with operating the HMS. So, let's be clear, you rarely use the one, unless using the HMS, which this thread isn't about. In this thread it's about locking a target, so yeah, as I already said, when I said designating I meant locking. -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!

In this thread it's about locking a target, so yeah, as I already said, when I said designating I meant locking. The designate button is also used if creating target points. Or if doing INS updates. Or for turning on the Shkval automatic scan mode. Or as you said you want to move the HMS aimpoint or uncage the Skhval. And possibly some more uses I've forgotten now. So in various unrelated circumstances, so I've personally been confused on a few occasions which button to use.
Frederf Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I've found automatic tracking to "stick" more readily if the gates are close to the target size and a little on the small size. A gate which is a little too big seems to have problems. I wouldn't be surprised if you could just set the gate to the min size and lock every time (in game, not IRL).
