Diesel_Thunder Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 I'm going through and trying to learn the various air to ground radar modes. I'm running into an issue, and it may be something I am doing wrong, but zooming in under EXP2 and EXP3 modes does not improve the image in anyway. Looks very pixelated also very difficult to pick out features. Here's an example of what I'm working with. The first image is of Andersen AFB, and you can kinda make out the parallel runways (24L and 24R oriented from bottom to top of the image). I can't imagine that I'd be able to pick out a target from that, not close enough to drop a JDAM anyway. Contrast that with the images from both the DCS F/A-18C manual, and Chuck's Guide and you can see my confusion. I'm either not doing something right, or there's something wrong. What I see: From the DCS F/A-18C Flight Manual: From Chuck's Guide: PC: MSI X670E, Ryzen 9 7900X, 64GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 3090 Ti, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Flight pedals, Opentrack Link to my Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DieselThunderAviation Commander, 62nd Virtual Fighter Squadron Join the 62nd VFS today! Zyll Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Try flying a constant distance from the target, ie. offset to your side. I believe the picture should become alot sharper when you are neither approaching nor moving away from what you are looking at.Zyll @ TAW
FrostLaufeyson Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 (edited) Not sure about how ED simulated SAR, but try to make the target area is at the radar boundary, which will make the image very clear Edited October 22, 2022 by FrostLaufeyson 2
Diesel_Thunder Posted October 25, 2022 Author Posted October 25, 2022 So I tried again, and I still cannot get that sort of image quality, even at the recommended offset angles. I circled Andersen AFB (Marianas) both around 5,000 feet and again at 20,000 feet. Here are my results: At 5,000 feet And 20,000 feet: PC: MSI X670E, Ryzen 9 7900X, 64GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 3090 Ti, TM Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pro Flight pedals, Opentrack Link to my Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DieselThunderAviation Commander, 62nd Virtual Fighter Squadron Join the 62nd VFS today! Brass2-1 Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 I believe you need more airspeed on the jet for the Doppler effect to work. Note the difference in Mach between your screenshot and the clear ones above.
Diesel_Thunder Posted October 26, 2022 Author Posted October 26, 2022 (edited) So I tried it again by going faster as suggested and that did not improve things at all. On a whim to make sure of my process, I loaded up the Persian Gulf map and flew around while scanning the ground. Quickly found Abu Dhabi International and had no problem with image quality. Starting to think the radar imagery for the Marianas map hasn't been completed yet, and is only at a functional level instead the high detail radar like on other maps.
