heracles Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Hello altogether, I’m new in this forum. My question is, if somebody has experience if DCS WORLD running on a MacBook Pro with the M1 chip under PARALLELS, which emulates the Intel processor? Many thanks for your reply. Regards, Dieter
SilentGun Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 From my experience (I don't own a MacBook pro) with how much DCS struggles on mid-high end PC's I don't believe it would run very well on a MacBook. I'm guessing you would get around 15-30 fps at most on a mission that doesn't have many units with low graphic settings. Link to my Imgur screenshots and motto http://imgur.com/a/Gt7dF One day in DCS... Vipers will fly along side Tomcats... Bugs with Superbugs, Tiffy's with Tornado's, Fulcrums with Flankers and Mirage with Rafales... :)The Future of DCS is a bright one:)
SkateZilla Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Reasons why this either wont work, or will be a horrible experience. A. DCS requires MS Runtimes, that are part of Windows. B. Emulation adds a Software API Layer, that reduces that performance of the item it's emulating. So you can emulate an intel processor, but it will drastically reduce performance, and you still wouldnt be able to run DCS without Windows 10+, DX11 and the MS Runtimes. MustangSally Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 (edited) Good luck with that. Might be better to just invest in a decent Windows PC? heracles Posted November 7, 2022 Author Posted November 7, 2022 Many thanks for all the comments and advices. I decided to install Windows 10 at my older Mac with Bootcamp. Then I have a original Windows and DCS should run quite good, I hope. In this case Windows using the hardware alone. Many thanks again. Dieter
104th_Money Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 Back in 2018 I ran DCS on a 2013 Mac Pro trash can using bootcamp and windows 10. It was the 8-core 3.0ghz model with 32gb ram, dual D700 6gb graphics cards and 1tb SSD. It didnt struggle at all with 1080 resolution. I was able to use the latest comparable AMD video drivers since Windows was running natively. Regards, Dieter Hi, did you install DCS on the Macbook Pro? I'm trying to do it with Parallels but I get an error during installation, saying that I need an x64 platform. I just want to run DCS for quick testing... not for flying. Thanks

Thanks Hello, I had success installing (and running) DCS on a maxed-out MacBook Pro M2 on Parallels, albeit with some nasty artefacts in the clouds and overall lighting, but with FPS ranging from 15 (on the SC deck with the Hornet SC qualifications quick mission) to 50 on high graphics settings and 1440p. I'll mess with the settings, maybe SSLR and DDAO, to see if the artefacts disappear. The x64 platform error only comes up when installing the DCS updater; once you get through that step, it never appears again. I resolved it by installing it via Crossover first, then copying the files in the Parallels VM. From there, in the "bin" folder, you have the DCS_Updater.exe you can launch. I'm impressed I'm getting decent performance through what are basically two virtualization layers and with unoptimized GPU drivers; who knows if, since Microsoft now officially supports Parallels as an alternative on Macs, we'll get proper drivers and better performance. I mean, once DCS moves to Vulkan, maybe it could run on Crossover with almost-native performance, and the latest integrated Apple GPUs are basically 3080s level... This gives me hope, until I can find the courage ( = money, MacBook is mainly for work) to build a proper gaming rig, to scratch the itch of aviation milsim. Screenshots attached - launching from carrier, and graphics settings (was running at 18 FPS in this specific screenshot). 1

In my case the processor is M1 Pro, let´s see its performance...

How much memory do you allocate? 1
