what about buying long toggles and drilling your own hole in the guard?

I bought a couple of red ones of ebay, trouble is the kind I got has a spring and other stuff where the hole should go so those can't be easily drilled.

Nice website, no prices though; you ask for quotes it seems. Also noticed these on the site...http://www.apem.co.uk/Switch_joysticks.html There is a USB2.0 joystick interface board to program with 3 analog axis and 8 buttons or so....that could be useful.

The switch guards you found look good, and there is a few different types. Let me know what kind of prices you find!

Been busy trying to make good looking buttons for the datalink panel, had to write a little engraving program for the cnc, here is a little sneak preview of a couple of prototypes:

The white line on the top will be painted black. Note: There's dirt, scratches etc on the prototypes in this picture, the "production" versions will look neater.

The green/white/clear stuff is epoxy resin, the button leds will be shining through the epoxy for a nice effect.

I am searching, but not having much luck. I worked in the avionics division for a goverment contractor and we used those on a couple of our units for fighter aircraft.

Looks like mafacturing of those went away with the cold war :noexpression:

Only have located that style of guard for circuit breakers and not the good old Honeywell 20A toggle.

Oakes, i see a problem in your design... it looks TO GOOD!

it's more space shuttle rather than "Brutal russian war machine" :P

frigging awsome work!

I gotta get my mill converted soon...

Symbols for the datalink are done, now I just need to engrave the symbols on the actual buttons and then assemble the datalink panel.

OH MAN..! You really went to town on the buttons..! Am I mistaken, or have you milled out a cavity that holds a piece of colored plexiglass inside the buttons?

You HAVE TO post pics with the LED's lighted up mate..?! I'm dying to see how it looks..!

Nope, I milled a cavity which I then filled with colored Epoxiresin. The plexiglas didn't work so well.

(... falling into deep thoughts ...) frigging brilliant idea..! You just solved a problem for me mate..!

Did you just mix pigments into the resin? Will any type do the job?

I bought some pigments for Epoxiresin

They recommend that you don't mix less than 100gram of the resin (about 1/8 the of the bottle) but that is a waste. I went to the pharmacy and bought a 100 pack of 5ml syringes (really inexpensive, btw) and used those to mix the resin with the hardener. Worked like a charm.

HEy , I will be using my CNC router to this, What Rpm's are you running?

Well the buttons are made out of POM (Delrin) so I run the CNC at arround 3000 RPM. Feed is about 500 mm/min rough and 200mm/min for finish. The top material is called Gravoply and is from a company called Gravotech Nordrad AB http://www.nordrad.se/gravyr_material_ip.html.

Gravoply is a two layer material used to make panels etc. I glue this material to the buttontops before milling the contours etc.

For Gravoply I find it is better to lower the RPM a little, otherwise the edges become somewhat raged.
