Related, but different to

The behavior of the laser range finder is not correct:

  • When lasing > 15 000m, then the range source is not updated
Correct behavior: Should switch to laser range as range source (and show 9999m)
  • When lasing > 15 000m, then the range is not set to 9999m, even if laser range is the current range source
Correct behavior: display 9999m, TSD laser LOS limit to 9999m
  • When lasing between 9 999m and 15 000m, TSD laser LOS indicator shows ranges > 9999m, can mark targets
Correct behavior: display 9999m, TSD laser LOS should be 9999m as well, not actually show the real range. Targets marked in that range should be 9999m away with their altitude above ground to maintain LOS angles

Track attached

To reproduce:

  1. Get in CPG seat
  2. Set range source to something other than laser range (for example man range)
  3. Lase something > 15km away
  4. Notice range source not updating (Bug)

  1. Get in CPG seat
  2. Lase something close by to set the laser as the range source
  3. Lase something > 15km away
  4. Notice the range not updating and staying the same (Bug)

  1. Get in CPG seat
  2. Lase something at 9999m
  3. Watch TSD as you slowly move the laser further out
  4. Notice the laser LOS following the laser above 9999m despite the display reading 9999m (Bug)
  5. Store a target point between 9999m and 15000m
  6. Slave to the target point
  7. Note that the altitude of the target point and range to the target point is accurate and also between 9999m and 15000m (Bug)

I will run it by the team, but you are intentionally exceeding laser limits, I will need to have evidence of the behaviour in these circumstance and I will ask our SME's

It is low priority however

thanks

It was already confirmed that 9999 is a hard limit in the software.

If that is occurring, that is a bug. The 9999 isn't just a display limit, that is the maximum range that laser energy is processed.

Not to say that the light beam itself doesn't continue on, but if the TSD page is showing the TADS line further than 9999 meters when lasing, that needs to get resolved.

Both TSD and the actual range indication should be limited at 9999m. Right now this can be used to cheat to mark targets out to 15km.

Also if no laser energy is coming back at all it should still be 9999m.

I don't see what that has to do with the bug.

Currently DCS's laser has a limit of 15000m for the laser itself, so that should be useful for weapons guidance for example. It doesn't matter how far that laser goes for ranging though. If it doesn't come back at all, or above 9999m, it should display 9999m everywhere.

It's not like I'm doing something strange or wrong in shooting a laser at a mountain that's 12km away.

@FalcoGer, here is what you don't seem to understand. BigNewy, NineLine, or other ED staff are not coming down on you for posting bugs. They are coming down on you for your incessant attitude and disrespect towards others in your conduct within the bug report threads.

You post quite a few bug reports that are regarding "fringe" behaviors or conditions. Yes, if bug reports are valid, they will be addressed in due time (and those are appreciated). However, it is a higher priority to ensure the "mainstream" behavior or condtions of the module are working first. This is what BigNewy was referring to when he said you were intentionally exceeding laser limits. Development is prioritized to those behaviors that are within the usable range of the laser.

You demand that your bug reports be handled within a schedule that fits within what you think is acceptable, regardless of the larger picture; and when it is not, you resort to your usual attitude as a way of lashing out for some reason. Your disrespectful and immature attitude towards the ED community managers is quite tiresome, and this is why you have been given multiple warnings and some of your posts removed. Your other posts had nothing to do with reporting bugs, they were disrespectful rants.

I won't go on an off topic rant in response to this.

Regarding the bug, I don't think it's as "fringe" as other bugs, which were fixed almost instantly. It actually affects the behavior of different systems. As stated it can be used to store target points outside the valid laser range, effectively cheating. It also makes LMC behave quite differently because you can't get 10km range for example when tracking an air target in the distance.

To be clear, I don't demand instant fixes. I just want the reports to be acknowledged within a reasonable timeframe.
