Mat Evans Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Hey team, Just noticed while looking around randomly that the Colt M4A1 rifle in the front seat has "Colt Deferense" instead of "Colt Defense" written on the receiver.
Tholozor Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 It's possible that may be to avoid copyright, same with many of the landmark buildings on the Nevada map? That would be ridiculous. DCS's M4 is software, the real gun is hardware. It's not being copied by ED in any way whatsoever. And it's not artwork either. You won't get sued for copyright for making a photo of your gun and posting it online either, even though it has the correct "texture". I can understand copyrighting a photo of a statue or a building, since you might consider that art. But making a model of a gun that doesn't even work is a bit too much. And surely Kalashnikov doesn't earn lots of money either in licensing for every game that has an AK-47 in it either. Edited February 28, 2023 by FalcoGer
AdrianL Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 If the misspelling is intentional then it is to avoid trademarks, not copyright. Only ED can answer this. See this for more detail. https://law.stackexchange.com/questions/1391/are-the-names-of-guns-protected-under-copyright-law-in-the-us Call of Duty does not use real gun names, for example, even although most people know what gun is being represented. This was not always the case but does now to get around licensing and trademark issues. PS! M4 is deemed a generic term, after a law suite between Colt and Heckler & Koch.
