Sky/Clouds/Scenery overexposed around the sun

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Please see below some pictures that I took through my Rift S. It is hard to show but the light scattering around the sun in very strong (I am using 1.7 gamma). I am not trying to show the sun itself but rather the radius at whitch everything around it is blown out and overexposed. It also applies to objects reflecting light (snowy scenery, white concrete wall..).

In the first picture the sun is behind the clouds and yet all the highlights are overexposed on a very wide area.

Bloom on/off doesn't affect it. Also tried on a monitor and the issue is not that visible because the overexposed areas look way smaller on a screen.

I am having this issue on the Caucasus, PG and Marianas map. There is also a new "eye adaptation" effect in DCS that compounds this problem when too much of the cockpit is in frame.

Am I missing a setting? Any Rift S users having the same issue?

Thanks,

You can take screenshots again from DCS: PrtScn key any time and then look for the files in \saved games\dcs\screenshots.

This effect is somewhat realistic and is not controlled by any setting. I highly recommend to set Lens effect>Dirt+Flare for better sun blinding effect. Gamma should be set to 2.2.

I am not sure that the screenshots will reflect what I see in the VR headset but I can try. If I set gamma to 2.2 everything gets too bright.

I am not saying that you shouldn't be blinded by the sun, I am trying to show that in VR everything is overexposed over too wide an area arround the sun. The atmospheric light scattering is very strong and you loose all the scenery/sky details.

If it wont reflect on screenshots then its a headset "problem", and by "problem" i mean it can be screen calibration, screen technology, lens, etc... from the headset.

Now you can use OpnXR natively on DCS you could try OpenXR Toolkit as it lets you to change colors, shrapness, contrast, etc...

I am already using OpenXr Toolkit and turning the highlights down helps a bit. Maybe it is the headset..

Hoping to get Rift S users feedback

So you got one but I use Oculus app only and don't change anything outside of DCS gfx wise. It may very well be different expectations though, that's why screenshot would work better.

I have a Rift S also.  I experience the same effect.  The clouds are washed out.  You can play with openxr, which as others have said, helps a bit, but still not able to get the highlights correct.  XR does help with the washed out colors on the Rift though.  I would suggest you give it a try.

Thanks,

Yes I am using OpenXr Toolkit and it helps. I tried the helmet sun visor on the Mirage 2000C and it fixes the issue but only works for this module.

I also find that the "eye adaptation" effect that brightens the exterior when looking inside the cockpit is more pronounced on certain modules. For example the mig-29 is worse than the f-16.

  • 2 weeks later...

How bright should the HUD be near the sun? I took this screenshot from the Blue's angel Youtube. You can read the HUD through the visor reflection. Minimum sun bloom
