Tusky Posted February 20, 2023 Posted February 20, 2023 Hi all! According to the DCS F/A-18 Manual (pag.338): "To make the corresponding waypoint an air-to-air waypoint, press pushbutton 2 (A/A WP) on the DATA subpage of the HSI; this will make the waypoint on the bullseye the selected air-to-air waypoint. Note that you may need to use the pushbuttons 12 and 13 at the HSI or HSI DATA subpage to change the current waypoint until the A/A waypoint is displayed. The DATA subpage of the HSI will display “BULLS” at the top of the display, and the HSI itself will display “BULLS” at the top right when the A/A waypoint is selected." In the picture below, waypoint #6 was selected as the A/A WP but "BULL" was neither displayed at the top of the DATA display not at the top right of the HSI. Three options: 1) the manual is wrong 2) something got broken 3) I'm doing something wrong Sometime back I remember seeing "BULL" though...
MARLAN_ Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 (edited) I don't know for sure, I looked through pubs and can't find anything, but I feel like the current implementation is correct, I don't think it would make sense to override the waypoint name. For example, real world the bullseye is often coded, e.g. "ROCK", and I think it would be an anti pattern to override that. Prior to ED changing the bullseye to automatically be waypoint 59, it had to be set by the mission editor and they often named it "BULLSEYE" which is shortened to "BULLS" due to the 5 character limitation. Tusky Posted February 21, 2023 Author Posted February 21, 2023 (edited) Thank you Marlan! Then it is only a matter of updating the manual: any waypoint denomination is inputed in the mission editor by the creator of the mission and not added "automatically" by the plane. Hog_No32 Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 (edited) You are correct, Tusky. You can designate any stored waypoint in the onboard database as „A/A WP“ (i.e. bullseye), the name of that waypoint (given that the mission designer actually did assign a name to it) will not change (to „BULL“). “BULL“ is just an example. Jello loves „ROCK“. In the mission I flew last night, the mission designer labelled it „GIANT“. The name really doesn‘t matter. As long as the waypoint in question is collocated with the actual bullseye as defined in the mission editor, you‘re good. Edited February 21, 2023 by Hog_No32
Tusky Posted February 21, 2023 Author Posted February 21, 2023 (edited) Thank you Hog_No32! @BIGNEWY It seems that only an update of the manual is necessary. Maybe "BULL" is the name used in the missions that come with the module... Edited February 21, 2023 by Tusky
