target far off angle while within radar coverage

Having launched an AMRAAM on a bugged target in CRM, so in SAM mode, I turned away. Eventually the relative angle next to the target locator line in the HUD showed 79° with the radar still following the target.

1. I am a bit surprised to see this, as I expected the radar to only have a maximum scan zone of 60° off the radar boresight. So what is the actual maximum angle off the gun cross, the radar can still track targets?

2. Also considering the enemy being almost at my 3 o'clock in the horizontal plane, how can the smaller attack steering circle not be completely outside the larger ASE circle yet?

I'm sure at 79 degree angle radar will lose the lock very soon, I'm guessing what you have experienced is Target History setting at work. So the radar retains the lock on a known position of the target fo x amount of scan frames depending on the setting.

I don't think you can scan for new targets at that angle.

Well you can still fire the missile, it's not ideal tho, but if the target doesn't change direction it should reach it.

The ASE is about if the missile can turn to hit the target. It is mid-course INS guided after all. It's not strictly necessary that the TOI be inside your radar at the moment of launch. Tracks will coast after radar update for up to 13s.
