I'll start by listing my NEW computers specs. Then describe my issue.

--

AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core 2.3Ghz

4gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM

Nvidia 9800GTX+

--

So I figure I could run the game on high with these settings, seeings as how DCS games have never made their primary focus "graphics" but more so the gameplay, and realism.

When I am in the cockpit and looking straight ahead (center view I guess), on the ground, I get like 14fps! However, when I look down so there is no outside stuff showing, only cockpit switches and what not, I get up in the 50fps range......

Any tips/Advice?

Look at this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=37249 (Which explaines why the CPU is the limiting factor.. in your case only one of the 2.3 GHz cores is used, therefore a faster dual/singel core would be better, try overclocking the CPU)

The things I would start with is (also update graphics drivers etc.):

  • Make sure you are running the game in full screen mode (windowed mode eats FPS like hell)

  • Turn water down to Normal

  • Turn shadown down to active planar

My drivers are all up to date, I always run in full screen. and I have used both affinity scripts, as well as changing the affinity my self. No luck.

P.S. I can run FSX (which is 100 times more graphically intense) with 45 - 50fps constantly.

If you know how to do it, try and overclock your CPU to 2.6 or 2.8 GHz which would be fine with stock cooling (I have my 2.4 GHz intel in 3.1 GHz right now) and se if you get a FPS boost... (Or underclock to see if that worsens the performance)

If that does work, then it's the CPU limiting the performance and only a faster CPU or some improvements to games engine would help you... (Have you tried to reduce the graphical settings I mentioned, I think those are heavy on the CPU as well as the GPU)

(A friend of mine got a 50% FPS boost by overclocking his CPU, it was almost unplayable before..)

I have found my best fps gain from setting the AA to 8X or higher - sounds wrong I know, but others have the same experience.

I am testing VISTA at the moment but every time I set the Affinity to both cpu's I get a bsod - anyone else experiencing this?

What is bsod? If it's blue screen or quit to desktop,

Then maybe you have some hardware problem with your PC. Resolve it first.

AA benefit would be placebo or marginal at most.

If you cannot apply affinity trick in VISTA, then you're having huge performance issue so AA 8x won't give you any meaningful difference.

I have no issues running XP (I have dual boot) so that counts out hardware ;)

AA effect is demonstrable - my guess is that when applied via the NVIDIA control panel some other routines/algorithms are being applied which are fudging the results. Fact remains though, there is a clear performance increase

My guess is that the bsod is resulting from a driver issue with some piece of hardware I am using. Hence my query as to whether anyone else is experiencing the same.

I recommend the overclock, I run an old 3.2 P4 at over 4 with a Zalman Cooler. My Vcard is an 9800GT that I have oced to 650 and 950 with the shader at 1625. I consistently get between 30 and 50fps. Im also running 4Gigs of Mushkin 800 DDR. Operating system is XP. Simulation is very CPU dependent. Both Chip and Video have controllable fans so while Im simming I crank them both up to 90% or so, The noise adds to the audio realism. You'll probably have to find your way into the bios to set your front side bus speed, start with small increments and see if your system boots with the new settings, you could probably take that 2.3 up to 2.6 or 2.8 pretty safely though thats no guarantee. EVGA provides precision tune with their cards so that allows you to run up the clock speed, memory speed and cooling fan speed. The Zalman cooler has a rotary rheostat to manually control fan speed .

OK

Huh? :huh:That's what I call 'hardware issue'.

You gotta find out which part is causing driver problem and have to resolve it.

Vista should run fine without blue screen or runtime error even without 100% perfect driver support. So I presume that you're having some issue more than driver level.

In case you're in overclock, you gotta go back to default clock first etc.

Hope you find what's the cause.

I admit Vista still sucks in driver support due to lazy hardware vendors(not just MS' ) but it's soooo much great in BS performance.

What I meant was that, since I have no issues with XP it is safe to assume that I do not have faulty hardware.

My guess is that Vista is having trouble communicating with some hardware, probably due to some driver issue. If it were TrackIR for example, then I would expect others to report problems also.

I have a Creative Audigy 2 sound card and I find it curious how different the game sounds under Vista - could be a clue. I will do some experimenting with removing some harware items, like the sound card, and report back.
