I've been playing several missions in GOW with agressive apaches, hehe, and little cover--out on the plains.

The hellfires are brutal, and the shoot quick at a greater standoff than I can match with the vikhr--plus the vikhr seems to only kill them with airburst about 1 out of three tries.

If I can get close they are not so hard to kill with canon.

I'm just wondering what other guys are doing in their duels with the apaches.

If you know you have a hellfire inbound, what are best tactics? I'm thinking high speed lateral, but so far not the best success.

Ka-50 is not an Air to Air helo...

however sometimes I have fun in striking AH-64s. But in an head to head attack or in visual sight, you are too much in risk: when I spot helos, I try to evade them and after try to surprise it. One shoot (two vikrs at time) when they haven't spotted me, else, and then go away and repeat. A second shoot could be too much dangerous: they can evade when have fired the Hellfire, we can't when a Vikr is in flight.

And the AH-64 have rotating guns... :(

The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.

I find if I release 2 missiles less than a second apart I often get a direct hit with the 2nd one. My thinking is that they decoy the 1st one but are perhaps not aware of the 2nd. In any case I get many kills this way.

Not much advice here. I was trained by years of LOMAC to methodically study the RWS but not react to every ping. DCS has taught me to forget study. The instant the LWS sounds, I BEAM AND RUN LIKE HELL! The other thing I learned: Giving the wingy permission to engage bandits is the easiest way to permanently silence the wingy.

I've got a nice little mission built to play with the apaches.

The hellfire is not as reliable as I first thought. Speed, gaining or loosing altitiude or side sliping can throw it off fairly often.

Once the 64's gun is going it's pretty tough, but it does seem to take a stable lock for him to get a fix and fire. Once you get real close, they will try to evade but, long as you give them little room, you can follow them around and play with them for quite awhile.

I killed one "excellent" AH64a tonite with my nose---bumpin him. Next time I tried same, I got smoke, but he turned on me and fired, hehe

My A-A evasion works the same as my SAM evasion. Get dirt between me and the missile.

I have yet to go up against an Apache, but I thought I read something in the manual about setting your missiles in the "Head On" engagement mode or something like that. The one where the missile will detonate earlier if something is closing distance with you, rather than a splitsecond later where it might be too late to result in a kill.

Am I crazy, or did I actually read something like that?

I have two fun simple anti-ah-64 missions---air start, one with 3 vs 3 and a few ground vehicles and some other AC, and one a simple 1 vs 1. If anyone would like them, just PM me with an email.

Regarding the hellfire. If you see the launch, you can move straight toward it in a very shallow arc one way or the other, then when it gets close, reverse the arc. Usually it will miss.

Beaming is good if you are way out, but not much help closer in.

No, there is a setting for this. I have it mapped to my controller but it is in the same bank of 4 buttons on the left side panel where the moving target one is. Look under "Targetting Display Control Panel PUR" in Control Options.
