Question to ED, re. sound errors, screen freezes

splashman

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i give up, i'm unable to get this sim running stable.

- i reinstalled DirectX

- i bought a Soundcard

- i reinstalled BS multiple times

- i downloaded it multiple times with MD5 checksum test

- i tested severall different graphic drivers

- i disabled AntiVir SW

I still have the problem, that the sounde goes partly away and shortly after i usually get a screen freeze. Game itself still reacts, as i can go in outside view (F2) and hear, that something changes. I can press blindly ESC and ENTER and i get to the debriefing screen.

Normally i don't have a crashlog, but an error.log with entries like this:

DXDefTexture: failed to load ±-13.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA.

DXDefTexture: failed to load steklo-4.bmp, D3DXERR_INVALIDDATA.

Failed to play sound Sounds/Effects/ClickThumb.wav, err: Ran out of memory

Is there anything addressed in the comming patch, that might help regarding those problems?

If it runs it is stunning but it is very frustrating to sneak for 20mins to a favourable position and then get a screen freeze, game over ....

i started another thread some time ago but got little reply:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=37365

memory consumption during play goes up to 1.2 GB.

Somebody gave the tip to test my memory, which i did with no negative results. one time i startet a memtest consuming 500MB while i was playing. i got bad fps (10-12) but was able to play the mission to the end (~30mins).

Sure is there something with my system, that BS doesn't like, but the more different checks i make the more it am convinced, that the system itself is pretty clean.

Ok,,maybe best if i list some possible causes, maybe no help at all, but better than nothing.

Sound mods...Have you installed any?

Page file, Check your allocation size

Getting a little slim on C: drive with availiable space

Is BS installed to C: drive?,,better in another other than c:

Power supply: I havent worked it out yet what your pw draw is, but what size is it?

Onboard sound: ?? Soundkarte C-Media CMI8738/C3DX Audio Device , thought you had bought a new card?

Have you updated MB drivers, which include chipset drivers, ide, usb ect..

Hope this helps some, all of the above could be causing you issues, BS itself is fairly stable, so at a guess its a system issue...

Regards,

Reaps

- clean install, factory fresh

- BS is on drive Q, ~40GB free

- tested memory with memtest for ~4h, no errors

- sound card is a Soundblaster 5.1 clone

- 750W PSU (way oversized, X1950Pro draws ~70-90W max )

- latest MB driver, that are available from Gigabyte

as already mentioned, i have absolutely no stability problems with this system, gamewise almost exclusively IL2 and a short period of Crysis.

if there is anything i can do, to get this sorted (activationg additional log output, test software, check system settings ), i would try it.

But until now i got no response from ED reps.

i know my system is at the lower end of the spectrum but i have seen a lot of posts of people with even lower specs.

Im hearing you splashman,, ED may not have seen it, but to be honest i expect that it is because its not BS per say, its just not getting along with somthing on your system, I would like to try and figure it out, For BS its not a common theme among the community as a whole for the game to dump like this..sooo, Is your soundcard sharing an IRQ, is your pagefile windows set? Antivirus conflict? any troubles with the soundcard drivers at all during installation? Is the crash common among campain, missions, quick flight ect,, Myself and Tiger are from the IL2 community and would hope that we can help you resolve this. Keep plugging away, someone will figure it out...

Do you play other games?

Though there is a problem logged with the error.log, it may well be that something else was caused, like a memory-problem, your PC running out of space for swapfiles or overheating components.

Maybe you can run dxdiag.exe in your windows-folder? (system32-folder, IIRC)

thx for advice

- yes, onboard sound disabled (BIOS), DxDiag shows only new soundcard.

And btw, symptoms with AC97 and soundcard were identical. Might only be, that i have better fps with dedicated sound card. DxDiag shows now hardware accelerated sound.

Only other games i play are IL2, GTLegends, and GTR2.

No problems at all with these games.

When Crysis came out i played this as well without problems, but i'm no big fan of FPS.

By now it's gone from my HD and i don't want to reinstall this just to check my system.

Because i need this system sometimes for work, i try to keep it as clean as possible, which means regular windows updates and system checks.

Once in a while i get a BSD due to a problem in the saitek X52 driver software, but so far this never happend in BS.

Report after change of location of Pagefil.sys:

didn't take long, started, accelerated and activated the flare program.

-> freeze

in the background the game played on, i could hear the flare dispenser poping flares and sometime later the chopper crashed into the ground.

this time no indications in the error.log and no sound problems.

Last thing that i will try is changing the graphics card.

I found my old X800GTO and i'll replug this one in for some tests with BS.

I checked the motherboard driver file on the Gigabye (v 5.10)website compared to the refrence driver on Nvidia's website(v5.11). That one is slightly older, you may want to give the newer refrence chipset drivers from Nvidia a try.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce3_winxp_5.11

Also I had one of those ATI cards that you are using. It acted strange and would crash out with frozen screen in Battlefield 2142 etc. Other games would run flawlessly. After hours and hours of trying to get tech support I got a tech that new instantly that there was a bad memory chip on the card...they replaced it and never had anoter prob. Funny thing is my friend had the same card and his went bad too, looked on the internet at the time and found out that this card was notorious for having a bad batch of memory. Once you test with your old card if it works then this might be your problem.

HTA,

ok, changed back to old X800GTO. Horrible fps but i could play some missions without problem.

But the again, first sound fading and if i the start the flare program screen freeze.

This time i was in outside view right befor it happend, changed back to cockpit -> sounds are gone -> activate flares -> screen freeze ...

So, i doubt it is my graphics card, i could test the X1950Pro with 3dMark06 for hours without a crash.

Now i wait for the patch and then i'll give it anther chance ...

thx for all the advice

ps: in case someone cares, error.log attached ...

I experienced something similar some time ago, and I was able to cure it by setting the hardware acceleration for my soundcard one notch lower in the DXDIAG-settings.

Hope it helps

HTA,

short period of joy is over, played the Convoy1 misson, just flying along.

First engine sounds went away and shortly after screen freeze.

This time not even any action from my side other than looking around via TIR.

Funny, in the same moment, the screen froze, sound (partly) recovered.

Last lines from error.log:

  • 5 months later...

HTA,

just a quick note that i still have this problem even after the patch.

Crash after ~5mins flying, first sound fades, after that screen freeze.

I can press ESC and ENTER blindly and that'll bring me to the debrief screen.

No crash log, but these are the only lines in the error log:

2009/8/11 16:35

Failed to play sound Sounds/Effects/ClickButtonOn.wav, err: Ran out of memory

I'll buy a new system after the summer, then i'll give this one a final try.

PS: re. any comments, that it must be my system, i can play ROF without (computer :) ) crash with medium settings (no shadows) at about 15-22 fps.
