So if you use the little watch in the editor to restrict units based on date and nation. You'll also always run into problems of units missing when they shouldn't. Like Egypt not having MiG21s, 19s, SA-3s in 1973.

Now the 21 might be based on some technicality of them not using the Bis in 73 but an older model.

But give we only have the bi's, those kinda technicalities shouldn't apply.

And it doesn't explain the lack of say SA-3.

So someone on ED should get on the tedious job of cleaning up all those units lists for all those factions.

I figure we should have 3 options for historical mode

  1. strict where we must have the proper variant for the time period
  2. semi-historical- where the variants that exist in DCS can be used to substitute for variants we don't have but their weapons will be restricted to period correct
  3. off- no restrictions

I can agree with cleaning it up and having them be as accurate as possible, but I can't say I agree with fudging them around, if historical mode is to be historically accurate (which is kinda the point of it), I'd like it to be true to that as possible, even in the case where we're limited on variants.

If I want a stand-in for my scenario because of whatever reason, IMO that's what turning it off should be for.

However, I would be onboard with upyr1's suggestion of having the strictness be variable. With strict only giving you the precise variants for the operator and time period selected (this would mean that the F-16CM would only be available for the US), an intermediate which gives you units accurate for the time period and operator but is loose on specific variants and off completely for when you want to do whatever.

I think a 4 way switch might be a good idea. As we are limited on the exact variants we'll be able to get I think this could work.

Strict- the exact variant has to be flown by a nation during the time period

moderate- the exact variant isn't as important. Just the model so the F-16C would stand in for any C, if we have multiple variants. If we get the F-16A then this would be the most relaxed the F-16 would go

relaxed- the basic type counts, so the F-16 would stand in for any F-16 but the payload will be restricted to the era.  Unless we have the F-16A the closest we'll be able to get to let's say the Bekka Valley engagement would be to nerf our F-16. Ideally, we would have the A model but realistically I'm not sure we ever will get the A model

off - anything goes.
