Hi,

I am thinking about buying VR equipment. But not sure yet. Is there a way to run DCS with specific VR settings (2*2160² for Reverb G2 or 2*2880² for Pimax Crystal) without having one? Rendered to some virtual device or anything like that?

Regards

not really... the reverb G2 runs at 3168 x 3096 as its "native" resolution per eye, its physical resolution is 2160x2160 per eye... also there is some overhead in the making the image 3d above and beyond the processing of just the displays.  But if you find a resolution that pushes 19m or so pixels that will put you in the right ball park

There should be a stereo mode in DCS (monitor setup -> stereo) I don't remember if it has been removed.
If it's there you can use it to simulate VR.
But as said above you need to take account the real resolution which is higher then the headsets' specs

If you want to get an idea how your system can manage a G2, use get an overlay tool like it comes with MSI Afterburner and let display the Frame Times. Multiply your 2D Frame Times by 2.5 (it depends on your resolution (4k should be good with 2.5)) and you can see what you would get with a G2 and what you have to change to get under the 20 ms Frame Time barrier.

I use Marianas Quick Start, Dark and Cold. 2 D = 5.5 ms Frame Time (looking straight), and with the same settings in VR 16.3 ms Frame Time.

The problem is, you have a different GPU from another brand and that can and will lead to different Frame Times and how they will be affected by VR.

With what I've shown, you will have an idea how much VR will stress your system.

A decent rule of thumb is your fps will be about half perhaps even little less than half than what you get in 2d monitor.

Running the same track with the same settings give me a 125-156 FPS in 2D using a 4k monitor, compared to 56-67 FPS in 3D using my Pimax 8kX at 4k per eye.   This will vary a bit depending on the settings used but as a general rule, you can expect your 3D performance to degrade to 42 to 45% of what you get in 2D for the same settings in the same scenario.
