I've kept all of mine with boxes somewhere. Even kept all my computers foe a while, but they got too numerous. I'm quite sure though I kept my US Robotics something, ISDN card, 3DFx etc. My Avatar has my VR helmet, and I have the ISA controller for it somewhere. I definitely have all my joysticks and cellphones. 🤭 🤦🏼‍♂️ 🙈

By now I have almost all of the games I used to own in my GOG-library. So it is a) possible and b) even more comfortable to play them again (in theorie). Only downside is, that some games that were meant for CRTs look awful on modern Displays. But there are solutions for this. Main issue is a lack of time.

When I moved in with the Missis, I had to scrap like a couple dozend of such boxes. Not only flight-sims, all kinds of games. My heart bled. But I kept all the printed manuals and maps! From time to time, I dig through them and dwell in the good old (golden 😜) times of gaming! 🥰

I feel you, when I moved out of my parents house, I scrapped around 150 game boxes (stored most of the contents somewhere in the basement) and just kept a few favorites.

And yeah, purely digital games are more convenient, but sometimes I miss discovering all the goodies that came in those boxes...

Now as you say it, you're right. I kept a couple, too. Mostly the Ultima-Series and the original System Shock e.g. ... 😊

I kept the bits and if they were easier to get to I’d probably be loading a few up tonight. Probably best they’re out of the way then, I looked at a couple today on YT. I was genuinely impressed when I first got this. Polygons of pleasure. Hilarious to look back at but they were all stepping stones to what we can enjoy now.

And yet, it has not provided a comparable dynamic campaign for any of them. The closest thing we've got is an official campaign which is largely hacked together as an experiment. DCS also has greatly inferior (and in fact, highly problematic) AI, which only recently started getting better. There's no real ecosystem in DCS, just a bunch of modules with widely differing quality standards and, often, functionality (for instance, the same radio sometimes works completely differently on two different modules). The other WWII sim is at least consistent, but it has many of the same problems its first iteration had, mostly because the devs don't recognize them as problems. There's not enough competition to result in a speedy fix to either sim. That is why we're not in a "golden age". It's probably made worse by flying games being a niche, as opposed to a mainstream thing they used to be.

Golden age doesn't equate to perfect.

Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!
