I usually have a flight of 4 Apache's that I follow at 40-60 knots altitude 300-400 feet just to keep up with.  More often than not, I follow for a small bit and start falling out of the sky.  I increase collective or increase power (a little not much) but keep falling till I crash.  What am I doing wrong?

My first thought is that you are messing with the power levers, or your controler is not allowing the power levers to reach 100%.  Push the power levers to FLY and leave them there.  You should only be manipulating the collective while flying, not power.

If that doesn't sound like your issue, you will need to provide a track file so others can take a look at what's going on.

Throttle is using my Thrustmaster Warthog combo left split-lever to control.  I have noticed throttle lever "all the way up" on my Warthog puts the in-game lever showing to be at the fly position to start with leaving a small amount of lockout remaining. Lock out dosen't matter because the warthog is already at it's furthest up throw limits   In game control options- axis control-throttle fine tune shows throttle at total limits when used so it isn't missing any throw there.

I’m new to helis and not much of an expert but it could be this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_ring_state

Like you’ll try to hover with full power and still sink. You can get out of it by pitching forward and generating lift with airflow over the rotors. You need more power to go into a hover at low speeds because you aren’t getting lift from airspeed. If you ask George to reduce speed to quickly he falls into this too.

It sounds like you are messing with the power levers as @Floyd1212 mentioned. After startup, there should be no need for you to change the power levers. Not until you are back the ground again and ready to power down. Only use the collective.

Yes I guess I have the left throttle lever as a slider.  the two Warthog throttle levers can be separated and used independently.  My left is for power my right is for collective.

After moving the power levers all the way forward with the left half of your HOTAS, use your mouse in the cockpit and see if you can get any more out of the levers in game, just to be sure.

I know it’s tough to fight the urge, but remove that axis from the left half and let it come along for the ride with the right half as the collective. Then you can rest your hand on it properly and access the buttons and switches as intended.

Hi @gdotts

As much as you can explain with words, we would rather see it happening to understand what the circumstances are. For that, we require a track file with the alleged bug occurring, something short to demonstrate the potential issue.

That being said, like others have mentioned, do not operate the power levers in flight. I would suggest you try to fly with that axis disabled and report back to see if your problems persist.

Gotta side with Floyd1212.
Use the whole Warthog as your collective. I use mine for the power levers, but I have a dedicated collective.
(Now, if ED could implement how we could manually select the power lever range, so the fly position is where my detent is... ).

Cheers!

Previous comments here have been about power and the collective (the collective is NOT a throttle) but to pick up speed you need to put the nose down a bit and are you also using trim on the Apache? (it helps A LOT, for hands off constant flying) Are you flying with the ball centred and/or the vertical flight indicator? in other words are you flying in a slipped orientation ( rather than flying like this | your aircraft is going through the air like this / which will loose momentum)

The cyclic will give you speed and by using the trim lock each time you adjust any of the levers that will enable you to re-centre them (torque/rudder pedals and cyclic).

I use an X56 which has the option for a split throttle however I only use 1 side as the collective, I do not even have an input for throttle power. When starting up I just have a button mapped to move the power leavers to idle then to full and never touch it again during flight.

Are you using the control indicator (default Right Control + Enter) so you can see your inputs to check if anything funny is going on.

I learnt to fly the Apache by watching lots of YouTube videos, CasmoTV is one of my favourites (https://www.youtube.com/@CasmoTV)

I use the "Eng oper" middle positions to set idle power. Up-hold to ignition/start. (Down to off)
And the "INCR/DECR" slider for both throttles.
