GuntiNDDS Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 did some forum search, but didnt really find an explanation of what it does, and when it should be used. thanks for clarifications :D got game today :) Great simulation, and performance is much better than I expected.
glottis Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 When in an auto-hover (and therefore with Altitude Hold ON), pressing and holding descent button makes you descend :) You just go down whilst it's held. You need to be careful using it to land, as the autopilot doesn't function properly at a certain height (4m maybe?) off of the ground.
GuntiNDDS Posted March 5, 2009 Author Posted March 5, 2009 i see :D thanks :P will give it a try tommorow.
nemises Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 it's used to desend while in a hove at a safe rate. It is exceptionally dangerous to decend when in a hover because of the risk of entering a vortex ring state (also called settling with power)...this effect will essentially "suck" you towards the ground if you decend faster than about 5m/sec when stationary, or moving slowly. Decent mode will decend you at 2m/sec , so is a safe (if a little slow) way of doing it in "hands off" mode.

The AP's disengage at around this height, so be sure to turn them back on if you don't want to land.
Frederf Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I thought while you held the descent position of the switch in the descent mode position (it's spring loaded) that you would descend until 4m at which point it would just not descend any more. The real Ka-50 doesn't just turn off the autopilot if you try to use descent mode to descent through 4m altitude, it just has a floor that keeps the hover at 4m min. Turning off the AP automatically because you are "too low" would not be safe aircraft design :p

Either I'm landing or taking off.
CE_Mikemonster Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I have to admit i've never used any of the AP 'features' like this (including FD), apart from Turn on Target, and even then not very often. It seems that as a quite casual simmer the fairly unique ones like Descent Mode get forgotten (it's not mapped on my HOTAS) and fall by the wayside. I know that we should all fly the BS like the real pilots but I suppose unfortunately without the training we sort of slip into what we need, rather than what we should.. lol (Hope i'm not alone). Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
Smoky Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 For me it's just about what I practice using. The more of the Ka's feature set that you take advantage of, the more you find the helicopter works with you. The Ka also helps one to fly very, very smoothly if you take advantage of these systems. Eg., using auto-descent gives you one less thing to worry about while you're bobbing around, taking cover, and targeting.
AlphaOneSix Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 This is how it currently works in game. Not correct. If you are in a stable hover with hover hold engaged above 4m altitude, and you press and hold the DESCENT switch, you will descend to 4m and stop. No autopilot modes should disengage. You should stay at your hover, it will just not go below 4m. If you have had a different experience, please provide more details and a track so we can see what may be going wrong.
