Gun Jam Posted June 8 Posted June 8 1 hour ago, Twwhitey said: This legitimately bums me out… I “ordered” an Ultimate back in Sept ‘24 - with what is now appears to be a misguided hope that was going to be *the* MR/VR device we’ve all dreamed of - alas delivery estimate went from Nov/Dec to Jan/Feb to Mar/Apr then beyond at which point I gave up and cancelled (my $4000 order) but honestly hoped it worked out for those that did get one and as an option in the end. Alas I resigned myself to the Pimax offering (egads much to even my surprise) because I needed “something” new and minimally functional to replace my literally ancient Reverb G2. I still had hope that maybe Somnium after a bit of polish and time to mature would be an option… but sounds like it didn’t work out for you… sigh. Still waiting for a Pimax Super in June ‘25 after all this time… it’s exhausting. Hope the auction worked out for you and at some point these VR manufacturers deliver for anyone other than YouTube influencers at some point… Well If you want like a bran new one for probably like half cost that ships monday its still running until 6pm PDT Sunday. You're not the only one bummed out. I knew it would be a dice roll and I had gone into it knowing that it was going to be a long road to get it working well and all the issues ironed out. I did not expect the image to be a problem, For me the center of the FOV is trash, it's blurry and has slight double vision with CA. I can look above the center and use the top 1/3 of the image and that is amazing quality. I could not find a solution to this, I'm assuming it could be corrected with lens inserts but that means I have to figure out which ones to try along with the massive pile of other issues to sort out. I guess I was expecting the image to be motivation to solve the rest of the issues and without that I lost interest pretty quick. I'm assuming that most people will be fine, I'm not sure whats going on with it exactly, I tried to find someone having the same issue I could communicate with but I found no one. I did hear a guy in a video describe and issue something like I'm having but no way to get in touch with him. If the whole image looked like the top 1/3 this would be a solid HMD.
Talisman_VR Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Hi Folks, I just got my Somnium vr1 visionary edition and am attempting to get things set up. My last headset was a Pimax and this is very different. Also, I have not used open xr before, so I am trying to get to grips with that too. Any set up hints and tips or warnings of potential pitfalls would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. Happy landings, Talisman
Gun Jam Posted June 30 Posted June 30 I had no luck with openXR it could not even run the DCS menu. I used steam VR and this ran well. eye tracking needs your eyeballs to be very close to the lens. use the heat map to make sure it working as expected. I cant remember if it worked with steam vr anyways I remember never using it because I think its only open XR and would require recal every time I moved the HMD on my face. In order to use any of the functions in the VR1 tool a program must be running so with steam house running or DCS running you can then setup eyetracking calibration and stuff like that. Looks like Somnium got their production speed up. That's good. Is the Image clear? 1
evanswillo Posted June 30 Posted June 30 (edited) Hi, I have been running OpenXR Beta 4.0 since release and I have not experienced the same issues that are present in the Stable release code. 90fps and 90hz. We are expecting the Beta to be concluded in July and the RC updated. Talisman_VR Posted July 4 Posted July 4 Good to read the posts above. Image is nice and clear in DCS, but the FOV seems a little smaller than I had expected. I am finding that the mechanical IPD keeps moving and slipping to a bigger setting whilst in use. Anyone else finding that? My IPD is 58, so I set the lowest I can get, 60, but then the IPD mechanism continually shifts with head movement! Trying to understand a few things. Like, is it possible to use my lighthouse tracker with Open XR without running Steam VR? Or is Steam VR always needed to be running for the lighthouse to work in association with Open XR? It would be nice to dispense with Steam VR completely if possible. Steam VR seems to cause problems with my DCS. I keep having to uninstall Steam and Steam VR in order to access DCS without Steam trying launch it in VR mode, even when I have logged out of Steam. Very time consuming and frustrating. Also, I just inadvertently found on the interned that there is something called a Somnium Space Launcher. Is this needed in addition to the VR1 Tool? What are the advantages of the launcher? Finally, I did not know that there was a beta version of the VR1 Tool, I just downloaded a version as per the standard instructional video. How do you access a beta version? Thanks. Happy landings, Talisman
evanswillo Posted July 5 Posted July 5 (edited) SteamVR does not need to be launched or running when using openXR in DCS. Just ensure you have openXR runtime enabled and SteamVR disabled. The Beta is really to only option if you wish to run openXR. Goto Discord Somnium - Announcement to gain access to Beta 4 download, and updated firmware if you are interested in 72hz and 120hz alongside 90hz https://discord.com/channels/494994753146847233/1301858258902061056 Beta is currently due to complete by end of July. evanswillo Posted July 7 Posted July 7 No need for any other Somnium software, just the VR1 Software itself, just ensure before you launch DCS, everything in the VR1 tool is setup as you wish. Have you installed the Beta 4 software and updated the firmware. ? Suggest you take some baby steps first to get used to things. Ensure openXR runtime is selected. You have the Visionary Edition so you do have ET that will allow you to use QuadViews and either FFR or DFR. The VR1 Resolution slider needs to be adjusted if you are going to take full advantage of ET. First try without ET and just set resolution slider to around 60% and see what framerate you are getting, need to try and match the freq of the headset so you're really looking to reach a stable 90 fps. Its important to dial setting down first and then slowly make an incremental step forward. If you have enabled QV in DCS you will need to alter the main resolution down to as low as 20% as you are probably running FFR set the Foveated settings 80 20 20 to start. Then try Eye Calibration to get DFR. There are a lot of things to adjust and understand to get the VR1 running at its best but that is the price we pay for such a cutting edge piece of hardware and something we all knew, but as the software has been enhanced the better the experience has become, you are joining us at a great time for DCS and VR, exciting times ahead. Yes, definitely baby steps for me, lol. I can't pretend to understand all of what you have said above yet, but I am working on it and doing lots of research. It is kind of you to take the time to help steer me in the right direction. Thank you again. I don't think I am ready for the Beta version yet, so will hold fire for now. Especially as it looks like a release version update is on the cards. Onwards and upwards. Happy landings, Talisman
evanswillo Posted July 7 Posted July 7 If you want to stay off the beta then I would not advise the openXR runtime as this had some serious issues when released, that have been fixed in the beta, simply use SteamVR runtime set resolution around 65% and enjoy. 1 AMD 7800X3D, MSI PRO X670-P WIFI (AM5) 64GB RGB DDR5 6000MHz Nvidia 4090 Windows 11 Home Version 24H2 OS build 26100.2605 Nvidia Driver 566.36 HOTAS Virpil CM3 Joystick Throttle & Pedal
Talisman_VR Posted July 7 Posted July 7 Thanks. Yes, I have been having issues with openXR runtime; no joy with tracking properly. I had more luck with SteamVR and actually managed to get some flying in, so will return to Steam for now. Thanks for the resolution tip. Happy landings, Talisman
Gun Jam Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Glad it sounds like its working out for you. My Ipd slider was not an issue.... maybe tape it 1

Is the VR1 going to be something you can use or did it end up being a poor buying decision for you? 1
Talisman_VR Posted July 21 Posted July 21 Just now, Gun Jam said: Hows this been working out for you? Is the VR1 going to be something you can use or did it end up being a poor buying decision for you? Hi Gun Jam, Looking very good for me I am glad to say. I am a happy camper. Still taking baby steps, but getting better. Had a go with OpenXR, but not activated eye tracking yet and decided to stick with SteamVR for a bit. Visuals are very good. I have SteamVR resolution per eye set to 100% at the moment, giving me 4752 x 3796 @ 90 Hz and up to 90 fps on some maps, but some maps less. A fresh installation of DCS with a new PC means a lot of catching up and I am still yet to bind all keys for all of my aircraft modules and am still tinkering around with graphic settings, etc. I had a Pimax before and I noticed that I needed to set a lower IPD in DCS VR settings than before, in order for the cockpits not to look too big in scale. Now I am wearing the head strap lower at the back of the head and the headset higher on the head at the front, I have less of an issue with the mechanical IPD knob slipping on the VR1. Wont be long now and I will be back flying with my squad mates in MP. Happy landings, Talisman 1
