I Did a search and read several posts about using the affinity tool to run BS on multiple cores. It was said that this is not possible in XP. I read a bit on the internet about some ways to patch XP to use multi core.. So my question is Is this still true that XP can not take advantahe of multi cores in DCS?

If not Im going to buy vista, and need to know if the home basic 64bit version will be all i need to take advantage of dx10, 8gigs ram, and quad core support.

Thanks

you can take advantage of affinity trick you just have to do it manually every time you load a mission. we dont get the advantage of a script.

No. While you can technically use the affinity trick, almost everyone reports no or minimal performance improvement doing the trick on XP. On my PC, doing the affinity trick on XP has no effect. In Vista, doing the trick almost doubles my FPS. Obviously, your results may vary, but I wouldn't get your hopes up on XP.

As wombat778 posted, you CAN use the affinity-trick, but it most certainly won't give you a benefit in FPS.

XP is simply lacking the architecture to support this technology fully, even with the M$ multicore-patch.

Vista Home Basic 64bit manages up to 8GB, 1 CPU with multiple cores and DX10. If you use your PC primarily for gaming or home-office duties, Home Basic should be your choice. It the lightweight-version of Vista, all demand, but nobody buys.

If you want a little more, you can consider Home Premium 64bit, which is able to address 16GB of RAM, but includes a lot more stuff that is installed and running in the background - stuff that you will probably never use at all.

On that note, I need to find myself some good run-throughs of what exactly is going on in the background of my Home Premium 64. Would be nice to sit and tweak that a bit.

...I would also love a hack that would make the bootup verbose. I like it when my OSes actually tell me what they are doing as the system is starting up - makes it so much easier to render a speedy troubleshoot if the system breaks. :|

Oh, and Home Basic doesn't have Aero! Which I don't use since it's a resource hog and stuff, but I have it!

True. In that regard Vista has an advantage over XP, though, as the services are much better explained and there are several methods to get rid of unnecessary processes.

The easiest way is still through the adding/removing software, though, as it was present in XP, too. Major advantage, though, is the improved userfriendlyness, so you don't have to use the XP-installation CD to uninstall M$ components

But well, what do you expect from a system you need to click START to get to the menu-point to shut it down. :)

Hahah, never thought of that last little hilarity! That is actually quite awesome when you think about it.

I’m a huge fan on Xp compared to vista. Stability and such. But I have to admit, under Xp I get an average of 32 FPS in cockpit, 40 outside, about the same with vista, but using the affinity tool, it jumps to an average of 52 FPS (cockpit), outside around 69 FPS with vista. That’s a major difference. One of my other concerned with Vista was the sound bug. But thanks to creative labs of releasing the Creative Alchemy application. That resolved that one as well.

I hate vista like the plague, but now… Well, ….

But I still hate other features of vista, aka defrag and any Installation process. Takes forever...:badmood:

Cannot agree on that.

Of course, if you install something with Defender, User profile control and windows-firewall enabled and don't run it as an admin, the files you install get tripple-checked and no access to the internet, which may take a lot longer than usual.

But I agree that Vista demands a lot more know-how, to be as streamlined as XP or Win7 and even to get the right version for your needs.

{Edit: Ignore the following recommendation. (See AlphaInfinity post that follows) }

I highly recommend Defraggler. It's a freebie, gives you a graphic display, and you can limit the defrag to selected files if you wish. There is also an option setting for moving the large files to the outer sectors for improved performance.

This thing "defraggled" my whole machine. Apparenlty other users with Vista64 are having problems too according to some post on those forums even those this app is "compatable" with vista. Is you use vista, avoid this thing like the plauge.

Anywhoo, back to my OS reinstall.

Auslogics is the only defragger that goes on my machine. Highly recommend it much better than vista defragger.

vista 64 btw

Ugh... I'm sorry to hear that happened, AlphaInfinity. I'm running Vista 64 as well, and it worked great for me. I've also used it on some XP 32 machines to equally good results.

I hope they get that bug straightened out, whatever it is. In the meantime, consider the recommendation withdrawn.
