A short video on the development of the Vietnam War Vessels RA-5C Vigilante AI:

First off, WOW! Just... WOW! The transformation from your teams work is just Awesome to watch! Secondly, I cant say I have ever seen so much in-depth detail of WIP especially through a Video on any DCS Mod or Module for that matter.. This was so informative and behind the scenes look at how difficult it can be and is to bring these Models to life in DCS.. Thank you for your hard work to you and the Team man, seriously...

Any possibility of an A-3 coming?

The Late update given on the A-3 Skywarror was that VSN guys were working on one. There was some talk about a tanker version but there were issues on the model.

Thanks for your kind words! I shared them with the team over at discord as well and they are well appreciated 🙂

Meantime we've put together a first release candidate for Vietnam War Vessels 0.9.0. The zip is a massive 2GB download already, unpacked it will impact your disk with ~8GB. So the mod is still growing, thanks to the various contributors:

  1. RA-5C Vigilante initial release
  2. MiG-21MF "Fishbed-J" initial release
  3. DD-692 Allen M Sumner initial release
  4. DD-724 Laffey initial release

Unless we find critical bugs in the mod, we will push this out next week before Christmas!

Cheers,
TeTeT

Hi,

Vietnam War Vessels 0.9.0 is out and can be downloaded from https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases

Release video:

From the github announcement:

Vietnam War Vessels 0.9.0 Update: New Ships, Planes, and Improvements!

We’re excited to share the highlights of VWV 0.9.0, which brings new destroyers, aircraft, and updates to enhance your experience.

New Destroyers

This release expands the mod’s fleet with two Sumner-class destroyers:

USS Laffey (DD-724): A historic ship that has been preserved and can still be visited in real life!

Allen M Sumner (DD-692): The class's namesake ship joins the fleet alongside the USS Moale, available as a livery option.

Both destroyers, like the Fletcher-class ships in the mod, are presented in their FRAM II configurations, complete with flight decks originally designed for the DASH (Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter). In-game, these decks can accommodate the OH-6 mod or even the UH-1H, though space is tight for the latter!

Updates to Existing Ships

USS Maddox (DD-731): Now updated to reflect its 1964 configuration, aligning closer to its historical appearance during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.

USS The Sullivans (DD-537): The ship wake issue has been resolved for smoother visuals.

Aircraft Enhancements

Updated Aircraft

A-1 Skyraider: Overhauled visuals and collision shell improvements ensure better compatibility with the latest DCS updates. While some minor clipping issues remain, we’re actively working on a fix.

MiG-17F Fresco: Now features two Syrian liveries: Early Sixties and Seventies variants.

New Aircraft

MiG-21MF "Fishbed-J": This interceptor, used by the North Vietnamese Air Force in the 1960s, joins the mod. While texture work is ongoing, it’s ready for action!

RA-5C Vigilante: A carrier-borne reconnaissance jet, available with multiple liveries for different carriers. Note: Due to its size, the Vigilante may be challenging to use on standard DCS carrier deck layouts. Starting from the runway is recommended unless further deck modifications are applied.

Flagship Updates

CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard Updates

The Bon Homme Richard model has received visual improvements, including: New rescue boats, antennas, and searchlights for added realism.

Kudos go to all contributors to the 0.9.0 mod:

  • ChedforceOne (RA-5C livery)
  • GKABS and Stratos (RA-5C pilot)
  • Hawkeye60 (A-1 and MiG-17 work)
  • Helijah (A-5 base model from FlightGear)
  • James J Jackson (new Destroyers and updates)
  • mrflyboy (testing)
  • Odyseus (MiG21-MF overhaul, BHR improvements)
  • seabat (all those liveries and testing)
  • Seabiscuit (new xcf for ship numbers)
  • Showtime 100 (testing and helo landing on Destroyers)
  • Slapshot (CVA-31 and Essex based A-4 missions)
  • toan (testing, wake file help, lua fine tuning)
  • Whiplash (screenshots)

Keep in mind that we have an on-going call for donations for Helijah, the author of the Vigilante model: If you like his catalog of 300+ free planes, please support him via the donate link on http://helijah.free.fr/flightgear/hangaren.htm

We hope you enjoy exploring the new and updated content in VWV 0.9.0. Your feedback and suggestions are always welcome as we continue to refine and expand the mod.

KNOWN ISSUE

When 4 A-1 and 4 F-8 launch from CVA-31, one of the F-8 will drive into one of the A-1. This results in the F-8 becoming in-operational and despawning.

Hi,

meantime we've found (by accident almost) the cure for the A-1 and F-8 colliding issue. You need to replace the F-8 collision shell:

  1. Download https://tetet.de/dcs/mods/crusader_collision.edm
  2. Place the downloaded file, crusader_collision.edm, in "TeTeT VietnamWarVessels base 0.9.0\TeTeT VietnamWarVessels 0.9.0\TeTeT VWV\mods\aircraft\vwv_F-8\Shapes"
  3. Install with your favourite mod manager, or copy to your Saved Games as usual

Good luck and sorry for the inconvenience!

Cheers,
TeTeT

Yes. I noticed that the Source code (zip) shows all liveries correctly, but the file TeTeT.VietnamWarVessels.liveries.0.9.0.zip is missing the mfile description.lua

This mod continues to deliver awesome Vietnam content!  Any chance the Skyraider could get a proper radial engine sound as opposed to the current turboprop sound which is identical to the C-130?  Also the Mk-81 bomb?

This is my updated CV-59 runway that allows parking/takeoff for 4 RA-5C and adds extra spaces for up to 20 parked aircraft. But as TeTeT said it's best to just use the runway for larger aircraft unless you are just adding " static" planes for eye candy. Also Cat 3 has a lower max take off weight limit for some reason. Not sure if that's correct or I broke something. The RA-5C almost winds up in the sea. All planes in this pic took off but 2 A-6s launch from cat 3 took a swim because they were over max weight. I only tested a few times and mixing in other aircraft types might cause taxi issues. Also I think I need to fix a wheel going off deck for a second when some planes use cat 4 depending on their start point.

Thanks for letting us know! Seems this has always been the case, as I use the same (faulty) script since a bunch of releases. Working on a fix now.

Description files

Thanks to @tanax bug report, we now made the descriptions files available in a separate download:

https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases/download/VWV_0.9.0/TeTeT.VietnamWarVessels.descriptions.0.9.0.zip

We'll need to fix the situation going forward and repair the faulty script.

@Stackup I'm not aware how we can add the radial engine sound without changing the engine to radial in the config. Unfortunately it didn't take off from a carrier when we did so. Maybe it's time for a re-test, seems ED has been fixing carrier code lately.

Cheers,
TeTeT

The Enterprise has a similar problem. We sort of worked around it by shortening the runway length in the definition for cat 3 and 4.

	{{-36.638,	18.46, -17.912},	352.92, 106.4, 25.0, 0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5},
	{{-46.811,	18.46, -31.578}, 0.0, 127.7, 25.0, 0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5},

Maybe change 106.4 to 96.4 or 86.4, and likewise for 127.7 to something much shorter and test again.

Gotcha.  I know next to nothing about modding in DCS so I didn't know if it was just a sound file change or something.

Hi, TeTeT.

Your VWV wallpaper file seems to have the same filename of default blank logo file for main menu screen's upper - right corner ?

When I set main menu wallpaper as RAZBAM's South Atlantic Asset or OH-6A mod, 2SAP mod (perhaps they don't have each own logo data and default blank file has to be used),
VWV wallpaper graphics (not VWV menubar logo) is shown there with scaling-down.

Yes, indeed. We copied the logo to  *\ImagesGUI\MainMenuLogo.png to give a unified look there when you use the mod. Before we had different aircraft and ship logos there. I'm not aware how you can change that further, if a mod or module does not provide it's own MainMenuLogo.png

Dear developers, first of all thank you for the update and I wish your team happy New Year and success in all your endeavors in the common year!

I have an issue with F8 - each time I try to start the game on the deck of the carrier as a pilot - DCS completely freezes, so I need to restart it.

When AI starts F8 on the deck - everything is fine.

Is it only my problem?

I have 2.9.4 version of DCS.

That's pretty bad. The F-8 only has a SFM (Simple Flight Model) currently and is not able to operate under player control from carriers. Probably we should retire the flyability of MiG-17F and F-8, as nobody in the team has time to test this aspect, or even if tested, to improve it.

On my opinion this is very good to have flyability option even with some bugs. I have changed cockpit for F8 from A10 to cockpit from VSN F104 mod and it looks and feels kinda authentical inside.

Hi Glen36!
How did you changed the cockpits?
I would love to change the cockpits of the VSN F9!

I have changed Cockpit_vwv_crusader.lods file. Opened it with notepad and changed the value to:

model = {
    lods = {
        {"Cockpit_VSN_F104G.edm",20000.000000},
    },
}

for VSN F9 you should find the name of the cockpit first.

Hi Glen! Thanks again for the tip. It worked. I was able to give the VSN F-9F the cockpit of the F-86F FC, which is much more suitable than that of the A-10.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that might be correct on CV-59, but the fix is very useful. I loaded the VSN A-6 with no weapons, just fuel and it fell into the sea because it was over weight. Hopefully you can use the Runway lua I posted as a template for Enterprise
