I just picked up the CH Pro Throttle to go with my CH pedals and MS Force Feedback joystick. I have a CH yoke I have used in other flight simulators and I have never had a need for the CH Control Manager software.

 

At this point I'm curious why people use it. It seems to work fine just assigning different buttons to the throttle and joystick. Am I missing something?

black shark controller settings pretty advanced..

you can pretty much manipulate what ever button/axis assignments

 

unfortunately, not all games are advanced as black shark in terms of configuration.

 

one might use the CH Control manager to map multiple joysticks as one, and then black shark sees it as one controller, instead of 2 or 3..etc..

 

black shark is fine without control manager..its the other games..

If you have to reinstall Lock On for example you will be remapping every key. With CH Mgr you can just load your backed up profile.

 

You can use scripting to do cool stuff. Like set air brake off when you have 100% throttle. Macros, repeated keys etc. In Lock On I have the CH pedal's toe brake assigned to the "w" key for wheel brakes as LO doesn't have an axis assignment. Can't do this stuff without CH Mgr. If you just bind buttons, you can probably do it much faster ingame, but if you have to reinstall, as Crunch already posted: The advantage is with the Programming-tools.

 

 

But any programming-tool can do much more than just that.

 

For example:

For IL2 I have assigned a button to select my left engine.

If I keep the same button pressed for 2 seconds, the key is programmed to select that engine, cut the fuel, Feather the propeller, shut it down and select all other engines again to control them.

If pushed for 4 seconds, it also actuates the fire extinguishers for that engine.

 

I will do the same for BlackShark.

 

For BS I have a key mapped to quickly switch to AA-mode. If I see an enemy, I can press it. The firecontrols are switched to AA-mode, the HelmetMounted sight comes down and the gun is activated in slew-mode.

With another button I can now slave the gun to my helmet mounted sight, like you see it in Blue Thunder.

 

You can also use buttons for specific radio-orders. Instead of going through the menus to order a rearm, I can also map switching comms to ground, the F-key-sequence and switching back comms to normal, to explain another example.

 

Or bind chatting "Salute!" to a single button.

 

You can even recenter the joystick to compensate for the actual trimming-system or you can change sensitivity, for example when you mapped the SHKVAL to the ministick on the throttle. Infact you can even map the joystick to the SHKVAL!

 

 

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are great scripts and profiles available at www.ch-hangar.com and a very helpful community, too.

 

Same is possible for the Saitek and Thrustmaster software, of course!

Very true there is a lot you can do when you program the HOTAS rather then use DX buttons only. Mode switching, advanced programming, macros etc.

 

The dx button programming is available for simplicity sake but with both the Cougar and the CH using the software is where the real power and versatility of these devices are evident.
