warmachine79 Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 (edited) Hey guys, what happens when I designate a target via the TGP? Does the designated point automatically become the point of reference for bomb drops with unguided bombs and the target for guided bombs? How do I make a GBU go to exactly the point? And does "designate" mean that I also "lased" it? Edited May 24, 2024 by warmachine79
BigBorner Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 Quote Does the designated point automatically become the point of reference for bomb drops with unguided bombs Yes it does. Quote and the target for guided bombs Depends? If GPS Guided: No. You have to transfer the coordinates after designating to the bomb in the Smart PACS. If Laser Guided - it will fly where you point the laser, you get release cues for the designated target Quote How do I make a GBU go to exactly the point? By Transferring the coordinates if GPS Guided (JDAM), by pointing and firing the laser until impact with laser guided (GBU-XX) Quote And does "designate" mean that I also "lased" it? No. Designate is just telling the PLane "Thats the coordinates i want to go boom". Designation and Cues will get more precise when Lasing while designating (afaik), but you have to activate the laser manually before designating for best coord quality. 1
warmachine79 Posted May 25, 2024 Author Posted May 25, 2024 So I need to keep lasing all the time, correct?

Yes for Laser Guided Bombs (GBU-10/12/24) - all the way until impact. Not for Laser JDAMs (GBU-54) as they update their internal target coordinates using the laser spot i.e. it's safe to turn off the laser once the target "laser spot" has been captured by the LJDAM (provided the target isn't moving). warmachine79 Posted May 25, 2024 Author Posted May 25, 2024 (edited) And how do I lase? Cannot find it in the keybindings. And I noticed it is the TPOD. Is that the same as the TGP? Edited May 25, 2024 by warmachine79

You configure the PACS so the TGP will Autolase prior to impact or Lase Manually using the Left Throttle's multifunction button. This short deephack video covers most questions re: dropping GBU-10/12/24 Edited May 25, 2024 by Ramsay 1 i9 9900K @4.8GHz, 64GB DDR4, RTX4070 12GB, 1+2TB NVMe, 6+4TB HD, 4+1TB SSD, Winwing Orion 2 F-15EX Throttle + F-16EX Stick, TPR Pedals, TIR5, Win 11 Pro x64, Odyssey G93SC 5120X1440
warmachine79 Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 (edited) In addition, does anyone know the exact sequence of acquiring a moving target? I am trying he mission "Cyprus Invasion", I cannot even hit a moving ship with the GBU although on the TGP, it looks as if the designation cue sticks on the target. I have "CDES" checked, laser to "Auto" ("L" also flashes in the TPOD screen after dropping) and switched to "PTRK" from "ATRK". I saw youtube tutorial but the guy there gets it wrong first and then it works somehow but I cannot see the exact steps to do from the video. Edited May 27, 2024 by warmachine79

You are releasing the Bomb to hit the Point that was designated at the time of release. The Ship is moving. Depending on speed, the Bomb does not have enough energy to actually get to the target / laser des. where it is at the time of impact. So, dont Designate the ship but lead it with the designation (designate a point in front of the ship on its predicted path). Dont think about GBUs as "guided weapon" (albeit, it is of course) - but think of them as dumb bombs that have the added bonus of being abled to be guided to a exact point
warmachine79 Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 (edited) No, that is not the problem, I have seen videos of the bomb hitting the target without giving lead with the designation: 10:45 In addition, I fail to hit the ship from any direction, so it is not an energy problem. Of course, it is not a Maverick, but the GBU likely is nimble enough to hit a moving ship. Edited May 27, 2024 by warmachine79
Rainmaker Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 CDES does not properly update designations in real time on movers. It's a known issue. So yes, in a way, if all other things are being done right, it's likely a contributor to the issue or the main cause. As has been mentioned earlier, the designation needs to lead the target to get the bomb in the right 'basket' to track the laser.
warmachine79 Posted May 28, 2024 Author Posted May 28, 2024 Ok, I will try to put the lotion in the basket.
