jvandemark Posted June 1, 2024 Posted June 1, 2024 (edited) How do I bail out of the Spitfire and open my chute? do I have a chute? I assume here that it's possible? or do you just go down with the plane? just started flying war birds, so this is all new to me I'm use to just ejecting from a jet Thanks Edited June 1, 2024 by jvandemark 1

jvandemark Posted June 1, 2024 Author Posted June 1, 2024 haha, thanks Do I need to do anything to get the shut to open? or does it just open
razo+r Posted June 1, 2024 Posted June 1, 2024 It is the same like in any aircraft in DCS, you press it, and your pilot will automatically jettison the canopy and jump out. As an alternative, you could also fly with the canopy open, if you so desire.

Better sounds, better visibility and I just like to feel the wind in my hair. If the farmers have been out spreading the fields I close it in case itās a bit whiffy.Ā Does the canopy jettison on the Spit? Iāve never noticed. Obviously it shouldnāt if it does. Might be me being pedantic but Iām curious now. Iāll have to close it and give it a go. Welcome to vintage props jvandermark. Try not to jump out of too many ol bean, keep the gear in for a belly landing and seek resistance fighters over occupied territory. Good luckĀ .

Not "jettison" in modern aircraft sense, mind you, but that red knob on top was connected via steel wires to pins holding the canopy, its rails and fuselage together. When pulled, it would release the canopy so that it could simply fall off the airplane blown away by airstream. I don't know if there's a functional key/button command to activate the mechanism, but clicking on the knob works fine. Slippa Posted November 19, 2024 Posted November 19, 2024 (edited) Iām still wondering about the MkI and IIs. Iāve got the manual for them here, Iāll have to fish it out. Richard Hillary always comes to mind when thereās mention of this type of thing. He was badly burned during the Battle of Britain and in his book āThe last enemyā he says he struggled to open the hood and it was getting jammed. He said ground crew had done some filing in an effort to improve the running on the rail but reports of it happening are sketchy. He was stuck in his burning Spit but managed to roll it over and drop out eventually into the Channel off Ramsgate. Went through hell to recover and should never have been allowed to fly again. He was killed in an accident flying a Blenheim on conversion training. The point that sticks is that he was struggling to slide it back, not pull on an emergency lever. Iād expect the MkVs & IXs to have it worked out but I wonder especially about the early marques. Thereās only one thing for it, weāll have to have the MkI, II, Vb and Griffon engined IX released in the sim so we can compare them all.Ā Iāll grab the manual later⦠Edited November 20, 2024 by Slippa Typo had me asking for a MkIV? 2
Slippa Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 From the manual for Mks I & II Still a bit dodgy with the āon aeroplanes not fittedā caveat. We can eject safely, why is this making my brain itch today?Ā
Art-J Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Ouch, can't imagine fiddling with a bloody crowbar when there's a fire from fuselage tank blowing in yer face! 2 i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
Slippa Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I remembered this the other night and popped the lid off. Made a change, a bit like early analogue chaff, chuck em the canopy, thatāll distract em.Ā 1
