Of course, this one is on my list ! :) It was used as a test plane for D mod upgrade. It is actually preserved in Szolnok, Hungary.

I've collected a impressive amount or pictures and profiles from coloured Viggens. A lot is very nice, the skinners will have huge job !

Another point in the Viggen not being exported are some pretty draconian arms export laws that basically state that the swedish arms export industry is not allowed to sell arms to countries that are embroiled in an armed conflict. There was a pretty impressive piece of outrage when people realized that swedish-made Bofors artillery guns were used by India in it's conflicts with Pakistan.

My personal favourite is from a couple of years ago, when an MP from the green party made a lot of noice about how swedish "arms export" to Israel should be halted immediately and an investigation launched to find out how it slipped through. Then someone pointed out that the "arms export" in question was armored glass for lorries used by the israeli to transport munitions and supplies.

I've always been kind of amazed at how upset some swedes can get when they find out that the weapons we sold actually got used! OMG the betrayal! :P

Though I do recall something about a variant of the Viggen being offered to the competition that eventually led to the F/A-18, though it (obviously) lost. It does contain a lot of american tech though, apparently (according to some journalists that have dug in old archives) transferred in return for american ballistics subs being permitted to patrol off the swedish coast when their missiles didn't have the range to strike Moscow from the North sea or atlantic. Not sure if that was ever officially confirmed though.

Another fun fact was that a lot of the funding for it's development came from the cancellation of the swedish nuclear weapons program. :)

Yeah, the land mines especially is a bitch. I don't have much of a problem with selling weapon systems like fighters, artillery systems and such, but friggin land mines... With artillery there is a limited (but worth considering) problem with unexploded munitions remaining after the fight is over.

But landmines are just such a massive problem after they're "used" that I have a real hard time accepting their proliferation. To be honest, I'd (almost) rather sell nukes than land mines, since at least the nukes are dangerous enough that nations with any kind of desire to continue to exist won't dare to use them. The mines however are easy to use and will remain for decades, slowly picking away at local civilians.

But that's ending up derailing things, I suspect. >.<

I had some thoughts about AJ-37 (Viggen's attack version). I think it should be impremented not as flyable aircraft but in place of Tornado. They share same type of mission with almost same weapons (included a REAL anti-ship missile).

And keeping JA-37 as flyable of course ! :)

And after a release You can be sure, someone (certain someone writing this post) will do a-g version of Viggen based on some other FM :)
