Has this installed correctly? Low level of detail and incorrect terrain at Camp Bastion.

Hi,

Can I check if the below screenshot is how Camp Bastion is supposed to look if installed properly?

The level of detail seems very poor, terrain textures seem very dated and there's way too much vegetation and greenery.

I've been Bastion a number of times, I never stayed for long but I don't remember seeing single tree, or even a blade of grass. The whole thing was in a desert?

I've ran the repair, cleared shaders and reinstalled the terrain but has the same results. Kandahar seems a little better.

Appreciate any help or support if it hasn't installed correctly.

Thank you

Definitely no trees or that green, even in winter

Any and all feedback is welcome, the Camp Bastion area is still in EA and WIP, thanks.

PS, cleaned out some non-Bastion posts, also note that internally the layout, textures and other things are still active or reported. But any feedback, images from real world, etc are always helpful, this is what being in EA means, you get to give quality feedback to mould the map. Thanks again.

Nineline, am I correct that you all were referencing 2011 map data for around Leatherneck and Bastion?  What's on F10 looks appears more like the restricted imagery you'd find on GoogleEarth from that timeframe vs this GoogleEarth Pro imagery from April 2013, which although not exactly how the base looked when I was there, is much closer.  For example, the BDOC area where I worked out of in the April 2013 imagery is different (missing some 40 foot containers and such) but its basically the same vehicle staging setup we had when I was there, and the EOD compound that was right across the street to the south looks pretty much the same, including the cheesy IED detection lane they had set up for when you first get in country training.  Tons more buildings that was is showing currently in game.  The DCS BDOC building looks like a big warehouse which is not correct but thats understandable if you don't know how the actual building looked.  The fence around the EOD compound is in DCS but not in full since it went around the entire compound.  If yes to the above, is the intent to get the base and airfield to eventually look more like the 2013 imagery?null

Thanks for the response NineLine.

No problem, I think I've misunderstood how the early access for the Afghan map was releasing. I thought the segmented release (SW, E, N) were releasing as each region was complete and not each area releasing into early access.

EFGross' post above is spot on, I think Leatherneck had much more solid buildings than Bastion which was pretty much all tents bar a few exceptions. This one is from 2011 over Bastion.

It's a complete portion of the map. It has high detail and mesh at EA release.

Quote

Key Features at Early Access Release

  • The entirety of Afghanistan with the southwestern portion available in high detail at Early Access release.
  • High resolution terrain mesh, textures and objects provide a realistic map from low to high altitude.
  • Numerous, authentically modelled airbases like Kandahar and Herat.
  • Diverse terrain ranging from towering mountains to vast deserts.
  • Recreate battles spanning the last 40 years.

I love the last sentence 😆.

Here is a zoomed out view of the GoogleEarth Pro April 2013 imagery.  Has the trash burn area to the SW of the BDOC, you can barely see the disturbances and traffic rutting in the west just outside the west boundary of the base where we used to test fire weapons if you're zoomed into that area, and (although I cant say if its the average number) there is a representation of where the aircraft were staged over on Bastion.  If you're zoomed in you can get a much better view of the zig zag and berms on the south gate straight down from the BDOC as well as the guard tower locations around the base (aka elevated sand-bagged posts built into the outer berms - see 2nd pic for an inside view of one).  MEF headquarters is clearly visible if you know what you're looking at in addition to the main gate to the north (to the right of the N325214.88 mark).  Since Leatherneck/Bastion was infiltrated in 2012 by the Taliban and again in 2013 and 2019 some people might find it useful if they're looking to recreate these events in any fashion.  Another issue in the DCS map (once again, not easy to know if you weren't there), are that the heads are modeled as open air buidlings with just posts and a roof.  Also there are trees which werent there IRL.

Why don't they remove the comment in the Afghanistan Map FAQ that states the S/W Afghanistan map will release in ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES AS FEATURE COMPLETE?  It appears this launched much sooner than they intended for it to be FEATURE COMPLETE.

Been playing with the map a bit, looking for info to learn who was stationed where and when.  Just started researching where Camp Leatherneck was located in relation to Camp Bastion, and google steered me over here to this thread.

Right away, 2 thoughts.

1 - Damn, what a big-ass complex this place was.

2 - Respect to all you guys that did time over there.

DCS, honestly, I think you did well to get this level of detail on your first iteration.
