WytchCrypt Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 Hey all, I bought Normandy because I love the geographical area but I only fly the Hornet. SuperCarrier ops missions are great here but are there any airfields in France or England long enough to successfully land a Hornet? Thanks! razo+r Posted July 26, 2024 Posted July 26, 2024 There should be a few around long enough. After all it is more of a question how heavy you are and how good is your landing procedure.
WytchCrypt Posted July 26, 2024 Author Posted July 26, 2024 Well, just had a detailed measurement session. Looked on the Caucasus map for a baseline and all airfield runways are at the least 1.3nm with 4 or 5 1.5nm or larger. On the Normandy map nearly all the airfield runways in both France & England are around 5,000ft which is about 83% of 1 nm (and many of those aren't paved). The only ones I found comparable to the minimum required length as defined on the Caucasus map are: England: Manston (1.5nm) & Heathrow (1.5nm) France: Creil is the only large scale modern airfield at 1.6nm and the next closest is Abbeville at 5300ft which would be quite a challenge to get a Hornet down and stopped in time. While that seriously limits mission planning options at least there is something suitable on both sides of the channel that can accommodate a Hornet - or should I say a somewhat less than perfect Hornet pilot Alienware Area-51M: i7-9700K, 165Hz 27" ASUS Swift PG279 IPS with G-SYNC, 32GB DDR4 Ram, 1TB M.2 PCie x4 SSD, 1TB SSHD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6, Windows 10, CH Eclipse... WytchCrypt Posted July 26, 2024 Author Posted July 26, 2024 Doh! Oh well, I've d'loaded yours anyway as it's much more detailed and complete than the quick measurement session I put in... Thanks! TKhaos Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 There is 6076ft in a nautical mile so 1.5nm is 9114ft (2777m) so should be able to land a Hornet there. I haven't got that map to try but I do a lot of F/A-18C flights in and out of Batumi which is a short runway at only 7500ft (2286m) so got an extra 500m on that. I have had a few times where I've touched down too late and had to take off again and go back round. I will have to do a video sometime, I land shorter than that but it's not exactly a normal landing, airbrakes go on and pull the front up, bit like a cobra until it's past stall speed then put the nose down hard and sort of glide in, although that can go wrong sometimes and face plant the runway

The Hornet has a low wing loading for a modern fighter jet and has big ass flaps. Try it out yourself!
