Hi All

I tried to run MT the other day and it was disastrous. So I uploaded my Log file and was informed that my gpu was outdated which I realised. Also, a couple of mods might be causing crashes which I will look into

My question is this, any ideas on gpu to run dcs MT at 75-90fps at 1080p. I posted before but now the ballpark has changed. I create missions but not too intense with 2 clients and the rest AI.

Cheers

What's your current system (to fit the new GPU) ?
And what's your budget for this GPU upgrade ?

We need more info before recommending anything.

Additionally, are you on a monitor or in VR?  Makes a big difference.

At that res, a 2080/3060ti and up probably will get you there, depending on the level of eye candy you dial in

At the moment, I have i5 6600k, 32meg ram, 4 x ssd drives, 650w power supply, 21inch monitor which will be upgraded to 24inch.

I don't use VR.

With that system, for 1080P single screen, I'd suggest getting one of these, used in good condition:

  • RTX 2080 8GB (Nvidia)
  • RTX 2080 Super 8GB (Nvidia)
  • RTX 3060Ti 8GB (Nvidia)
  • RTX 3070 8GB (Nvidia)
  • RX 6700XT 12GB (AMD)

All of these perform fairly similar.  Models with dual fans are "ok", but models with triple fans (better cooling) are prefered.

You should find plenty of these "pre-owned" at £200-ish on Ebay. Look for those listed by good reputation sellers.
Enquire seller about what use the GPU has had, if there's any problems at all. Ask for more pictures if ones in advert are not enough to judge it on aspect alone.
If any mention of "mining" is included in the response, then run away and look elsewhere.
Otherwise, if it's fullly working and good condition, any of these mentioned GPUs should be reliable and do what you want.

If it really needs to be brand new, I'd say to look for the Nvidia RTX 4060Ti 16GB (any variant), or the AMD RX 7700XT 12GB (any variant).
But, being newer models and all brand new, be prepared to pay considerably more.

PS: I know people frown upon used GPUs but, personally, I think they're absolutely worth considering, given how overpriced the market is for brand new GPU products.

If you are UK and want to buy second-hand could try CEX, not my favourite with the grading methods and a little more expensive than eBay but at least they give warranties on all the stuff they sell. Just need to be careful with some stuff, for example my local shop was selling a Firestick for £33, Grade B so I pointed out you could buy it brand new for £30.

If you want to go for new then you got these places:

https://www.scan.co.uk/ does daily flash deals, get nearly all my stuff from them and used them for years.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ is fairly decent and been using them since about 2007.

https://www.ebuyer.com/ isn't too bad, had an account with them for 20+ years although not as cheap as they used to be.

https://www.cclonline.com/ has been around since the 90's, can be hit and miss on prices buy worth looking at as some stuff is cheaper.

https://box.co.uk/ not used these personally but they have been around a while and they do sell some of the older tech along with newer so might pick up something off the list new.

Failing that you got Amazon, need to check daily for flash sales but some stuff is really cheap, I've seen GPU's with 40% off before, if you aren't in a rush the Black Friday sales are on in November but good chance you will find a better deal before then.

Getting new might be a better option, at least you know what you are getting and as you say, some prices for second hand is stupid.

I've used ebuyer a lot and have decent prices. Been looking at cclonline.

I have a little used (6 months) FTW3 RTX 3070, which is available in its original box. Excellent condition. Was replaced by a 3080ti not long after I purchased it in the UK.  If you make me a reasonable offer I am happy to sell if you are interested. No pressure whatsoever.

Ryzen 9800X3D, MSI  RTX 4090, 2 TB SSD, 64GB 5200 MHZ DDR5 RAM, MSI 670E Motherboard, Pimax Crystal. Buttkicker Plus, WINWING Rudder Pedals & F16EX Throttle: FSSB-R3-MKII ULTRA Base/TMWH Joystick: DCS: F16C.

From a 21″ FHD monitor to a 24″ FHD? This is definitely a strange idea.

24 FHD is, if I'm correct, 91.79 PPI and that's the same as QHD 2560 × 1440 in 32". So 32" QHD will be the same to your eyes as 24" FHD. If you're thinking about a better GPU and a better monitor, the 27"/32" QHD is much better for DCS flight simulator.

Richi,

I was always looking at 27+ inch monitor but a lot of people were commenting on the pixelisation. I have a problem with my eyes due to an illness and I cannot focus on small icons so always 1080p. And they were saying anything over 24inch, you start noticing.

Its very difficult when there is nothing to see comparison images on 1080p with different monitors

Cheers for the input

Nuggetz, it looks a bit big for the space in my rig. Will keep in mind.

Cheers

Ah, now I understand your choice. Sorry for my stupid advice. Good luck man.

EDIT: I'm sorry, maybe I don't fully understand your health issue and I don't want to .... you off, but one last thing.
24" FHD is 53.13cm × 29.89cm. 32" QHD is 70.84cm × 39.85cm. Both at 91.79 PPI.
1cm on a 24" FHD will be 1,3cm on a larger 32" QHD. So the objects will not be smaller, but larger at the same PPI resolution.
If you can't use a higher resolution = higher PPI (UHD), the 32" QHD will be the same as the 24" FHD, only the monitor area is a bit bigger.
Try this option somewhere.
Richi.
