Doppler only recording forward motion, not direction

From a cold start, the cursor on the moving map always moves total distance travelled solely in the direction the aircraft spawned in, not the direction it travelled - so if I spawn facing North, take off and fly 10 km S, then 3 more 10km legs W, N, E, the moving map cursor indicates that I'm 40km North of where I started, not back at the starting point.

What have I missed in the startup?

Did you put the “airspeed to DISS” switch up? 
 

If you spawned cold, it also takes 5 minutes for it to even warm up

Is airspeed to DISS required at present? For many months it was bugged and not required for the moving map.

I had been putting it to "on" when I originally posted (up), but when I checked against a started hot on the ground aircraft it was off, so I didn't the next time & also the startup list I had said:

"Look at the Course System control panel. Make sure that the three-position operating mode switch is in the “МК” (MAG) position

(...)
 On the ARK-15 control panel, set the mode switch to the “КОМ” (COMPASS) position" 

& on the hot started aircraft these were set to "Giro" and "off" respectively.

Setting up as for the hot started aircraft instead of as for the checklist made it work.

In your case, the gyro and airspeed to DISS were the factors. ARK settings only affect the direction finding. 
 

Hot start often also puts Mi-24P in “DG,” which drifts over time compared to “MK.”

it is not required. It is NOT required in real life either because it is for emergencies. If Doppler system fails, the map and navigation can still work using assuming IAS as true airspeed and compass direction as your heading/track with 0 drift. Always keep it off

I'm just guessing here, but I think he asked whether "airspeed to DISS" is normal mode of operation.

Answer is no, that switch stays down, unless your Doppler is broken.
