The Load is Swinging Fore and Aft...Tim? Ten? Tam?

Recommended Posts

The cargo guy is driving me nuts. He's constantly saying something I can barely understand like "the load is swinging fore and aft...ten" over and over. Ten what?! Tim? Tam?

How can I make him understand I don't want to hear him anymore

Ten? Are you very low, like ten feet over ground?

Ah! Now I remember. It's "tension". I think the cable/rope is about to break or something.

ohhh. definitely does not sound like "tension". maybe he just shortens it to 10. i kind of think there might be some issues with sling loading in general beyond the annoying tension guy. for example I've got TWO sling load cargos below me and no matter what I do I cannot drop em. I was trying to drop them into a volcano but they will not eject. I've smashed the cargo hook release button (after opening cover) and also flipped the emergency cut switch. the cargo will not leave me

Yeah, I probably remember incorrectly. Haven't done any sling loading yet. It's probably about time though! 😄

Ten as in 10 feet, is how I understand it.
he tells you it’s centered too, so if it’s swinging he will tell you how far out it is swinging

Ah! That makes sense. Haven't slung much in American helis, mostly Mi-8.

"The load is swinging forward and aft. Ten" -> the load is "oscillating" (I don't know if that is the correct word) in the direction of flight, 10 feet 😛

"The load is swinging side to side. Ten" -> same, but perpendicular

interesting. however I never heard anything other than "ten". there was no "5" or "15" or any other number. only 10, again and again and again 😥

Do some aggressive manoeuvres and you'll hear other numbers 😉

It goes with 10ft intervals and eventually to at least 30ft (don't think I ever heard any more than 30ft)

But yes, this is a very old, poorly implemented feature (I think it was already there with the UH1 release) and could really use a revamp. It's very unclear what is said...

"The load is hanging steady, take it awot"😅

Do the Mi-8 with Russian voice overs for extra credits.

At this point I feel like DCS would be missing something without his strange directions : )
