Ugly Five Zero Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Hi everyone. Hopefully this is the right forum section. I just had a bit of a mishap while on my first combat mission... which if you watch this replay you will agree I'm not ready for! http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UGIM859W at the end, after entering a vortex stall I increased the collective (i assume too much) and I lost power, the master warning kicked off and the ekran was giving me warnings about the electric accumulator, and gearbox oil pressure. Would anyone be so kind as to watch this replay and try to identify exactly what happened? Feel free to fast forward to the end, as watching my inept attacks might be a little depressing! especially as the deadzones for the trim wheels I use to quckly move the camera aren't set and it all goes a bit wrong... Though if you feel like watching the whole thing then any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  Thanks for your time, and good hunting!
joey45 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 In a vortex you - push forward on the stick, lower collective to get forward flight and fly out of it.. if your under a certain hight... pull the yellow and black handle between your legs... gonna download your track... I need some humur. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. GGTharos Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Yup, like joey said - you do not exit the VRS with power - in fact, it is what causes VRS. Push your cyclic in any direction and leave collective alone, or reduce it. If you increase collective, RPM slows for the rotor and you lose power - it is the rotor shaft that drives the generator ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
joey45 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 if you have the hight... The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Ugly Five Zero Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Thanks guys, I guess for someone who knows almost nothing about flying a heli trying to add power is usually someones first, and probably last mistake in this kind of situation. Though the vortex wasn't what killed me, it was the loss of power... and forgetting that I could eject!
enigma6584 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 How can you not know anything about flying? Are you not Ed Macy? :music_whistling:
Jack McCoy Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Enigma, I thought the same thing, but from the nature of the question (valid, but helo-newbish), he's not that "Ugly". Ugly Five Zero Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 :D Helo Noob is too kind! Horrible liability might be closer to the mark... The only ugly thing about my flying is the pained expression on my face when the KA-50 does something completely different to what I expected! But soon I hope that my flying lives up to the call sign :smilewink: maybe a year or 2.
joey45 Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 everyone starts out as a N00b, even the good ones and me... Ugly Five Zero Posted June 2, 2009 Author Posted June 2, 2009 Ok, I discovered what the problem was... ice, its cold up in the mountains. Haven't actually killed myself through vortex stall yet.
viper169th Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Hi Ugly, The other thing to watch for is the "H" in the bottom of the HUD if you see it appear immediately give it more power and this will keep you out of the vortex ring. :)
joey45 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 was woundering what that was for... The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
