Thats just DCS. Its always been that way.

But it was improved on other maps like PG or Syria. I think Caucasus also have better night lighting range.

Yes you are correct it sucks a bit less on other maps... Its still my least favorite thing about dcs. I still consider it inadequate even on the best map, it's less than half of what it should be assuming clear air.

Have you set visibility range to extreme and tried PG map?

Indeed Kapitan! Its a noted improvement for sure. Im glad to see things moving in the right direction but I can still see lights fade out and end. Im also aware that part of this issue appears to be VR related. Extreme range in 2d still allows for items to obviously draw in but I think this issue is made more obvious in VR as "extreme" in VR does not seem to be the same as extreme in 2d. I fly only VR but I fly mostly online with friends who fly 2d and they typically can see something like smoke draw in a bit further than I can. I'm really hoping that this can be addressed in 3.0. Perhaps Vulkan or whatever else their doing can allow for some ranges that allow things like lights and smoke to draw in more naturally. Pop in especially with lights has been terrible since before DCS world and only in the last year or so has made any noted improvements. I feel it's still way behind.

EDIT:

Initially I thought it was some sort of a bug introduced in late 2024, but no. It's years old.

I don't intend to do night flying but if I did even with 10% of intended time frankly I'd just contact ED support for a money-back. This isn't 'lighting outdated because the map is outdated.' The night lighting is outright broken.

At visibility range 'Very High' city lights not visible when overflying the city?! What the hell?! Just look at it. Clear weather and my flight turned into a pitch-black affair.

At 37min you can see the city lights over at least 5nm but yes, they are very dim and short range - hence the thread.
