Betting Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Today I worked out how to launch the Vikhr missiles after much expirementation . I set up a mission with unlimited ammo to practice over and over again against stationary targets. But contrary to what I thought would happen, something quite surprising occurred. Even though the missiles were laser guided, they didn't hit their targets every time. I'd guesstimate that only about 75%ish hit (some just plowed into the ground). The launch distance in most cases was about 1km at 100m altitude. I also tried hitting a target from 5km. Is this hit ratio about average for most people? Or is there something basic I might be missing?
deltatango Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I get closer to 99% accuracy. Do you have the Laser standby ON/OFF switch to ON? This is right next to the RESET button on the panel just in front of the Engine cut-off valve levers. If not, you'll still get the launch authorised 'C', but range will not be accurate and they'll miss. Cheers, DT Junior Member for over 6 years. Difference between Ordinance and Ordnance. EtherealN Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Also, at very close range the missiles will be spiralling which can cause them to hit the ground. Also, if you are moving sideways too fast they can end up outside the laser beam (they don't follow a laser point on the target, but rather have detectors in the rear to stay within the beam), whereafter they'll go ballistic and might very well miss the target. Finally, 1km is on the short side. Against most targets where you would care to use a Vikhr you would be within their effective weapons range - for example you need to be maneuvering very wildly to keep a skilled and undamanged tank from sending a SABOT into you on that range. deltatango Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Min stated range is 800m. That is REALLY close. I've found in the campaigns, that the best way to engage ALL targets is at max range. Use the TPs preloaded in the PVI to find the target location (see page 6-20 of the manual), hit uncage and the SHKVAL will slew to the target point (I love this feature!). Then manually slew around and lock on. At max range fire the first shot and then slow to a hover. After the first round hits, stabilise in a hover and slew to other targets in the area. If you're getting the 'UNDER ATTACK' warning you're too close. This is the way I have found to succesfully employ VIKHRs in missions without labels on. I might write a full how-to on this based in my 32hrs 26min (and 29 deaths) of lessons learnt so far. I reckon employing VIKHRs well, is the key to this sim. Until I understood how do this well, I got nailed every mission. Cheers, DT Junior Member for over 6 years. Difference between Ordinance and Ordnance. My X-52 Pro Profile. My Nevada training mission

Betting Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 Thanks for all the replies everyone, I really do appreciate it. Just so much stuff to remember in this game, it really needs to become a full-time job just to be able to fly it reasonably. But even during these practice runs (while even though just practice) are a whole pile of fun, I'm just imaging how difficult a campaign might be. Get up too high and everyone and anyone can see you and kill you. Can't imagine the skill level required to beat a single mission (let alone a campaign).
CAT_101st Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Iv got a 99% as well. If I am with in 4K of a target I am going for the gun. unless it is a tank. Svend_Dellepude Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 8-9 km should get a hit most of the time. they are just about useless within 4 km of the target. find a good standoff position and lanch, they need time to home in on the target. It took me a month(cant remember how many fights I had with my wife) to jump in the campaign and I couldn't finish a mission without shoot down. Now I finished all the campaign's and replaying them. :smartass: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] ASUS M4A79 Deluxe, AMD Phenom II X4 940@3.5GHz, ATI 6870 1GB, Windows 7 64bit, Kingstone HyperX 4GB, 2x Western Digital Raptor 74GB, Asus Xonar DX Sound Card, Saitek X52 PRO, TrackIR 44: Pro.
