I initially thot this was a bug, but no so sure

Step 1 of Take off tutorial

  • Tail wheel button unlit, helo not spinning.

Step 2

  • Tail wheel button unlit, helo not spinning.
  • Click Unlock tail wheel, helo starts spinning, attempted redeployment by clicking on the lock/unlock the buttons stays lit, indicating no status change, the EUFD however toggles between lock and unlock, helo still spinning.

Tried again, but this time reduced power and collective, now everything seems to be working as it should.

When the tail wheel is unlocked and want to lock again. You press tail wheel lock and roll the helicopter a few inches forward on the ground. Then it should work. @LaLa

You rarely ever want to reduce the power levers; keep them on FLY, unless shutting down the aircraft.

Use the anti-torque pedals to balance out the thrust of the tail rotor when the tail wheel is unlocked.

Like Corbu1 said,  the wheel won't actually lock into position again until it is centered, like after you have started rolling forward in a straight line.

Easily proved by pulling into hover, and the tail wheel centering spring/cam will move the wheel back to mid position and lock.

There is no centering spring/cam on the tail wheel. It’s capable of rotating 360 degrees. It’s centered by aerodynamic or ground forces. I.e. you fly or ground taxi forward to center and align the tail wheel. The unlock pin then drops to lock the tail wheel in place, provided you’ve commanded the tail wheel to lock.

Yes - it can rotate a full 360 (shopping trolley wheel) and maybe not a spring/cam - but do believe there is a centering mechanism that aligns the wheel fore/aft once the weight is off the wheel. So if unlock is deselected, once centred the plunger will engage locking the wheel F/A under spring pressure, the hydraulic pressure used to withdraw and hold the pin in the dis-engaged position being removed. (As far as I believe(d) anyway - though everyday is a school day!).

I'm a bit lazy so just gently push my cyclic forward with enough collective to tip the nose down slightly and unweight the tail enough to let the tail wheel centre.

Hi Brad - sry but it seems that is not quite correct.

As I am unable to post anything from actual manuals - suffice to say there may be an Operational Check with the aircraft jacked to turn the tailwheel to the side, and check if it returns to centerline when let go. If it does not - it might refer you to another paragraph to fault find why the TW isn't returning to center by itself with aircraft in the air. 😉
