@Wagsmentioned this during the Q&A and it got me thinking about what it might look like. I think a good solution would be a wheel menu or something similar, but the items are highlighted by moving your head. So for instance:

Hold comm switch, look slightly up/left to highlight entry, release comm switch.

The main problem with the current menu is reliance on keyboard/mouse, and scroll/selection buttons on the HOTAS would take up precious buttons.

What do you guys think?

This is actually incorrect. I use a hat on for this, let's say the trim hat. When the menu is closed, it works as a trim hat, when the menu is open, I can browse the menu.

You're idea is good though, while the best and most immersive way is of course using voice.

Yes, that would be a decent way to do it. So decent in fact, that i assume it's what ED is already considering. Arent't the Heatblur Rio UI and ED helicopter gunner UI done similarly?

I would just love to also have the option of using voice recognition naturally and immersively with the ED VoIP Mic keybinds. That would be a very cool use case for all the new AI tech...
*edit* sniped by @MAXsenna on voice being the most immersive way to do it...

Do you mean like a shift state on the hat? I use that for view changes.

I don't know, do they use head movement? Voice would be nice of course, but I think you still need a menu for those that don't want to go that way. Also, if you're not sure what you need to be saying you can look at the list.

No. You don't need to add a toggle yourself, if that's what you mean. It's automatic like the George/Petrovich rose.

Heatblur's Jester does. ED's George/Petrovich does not, unless something changed that I missed, and I don't think I did, because they use long/short presses in up/down/left/right directions, quite different from Jester.

Not sure if the MP crowd would agree, but if they could have an option to surpress "own pilot's" voice, (like VAICOM can, on own computer), for other players, it's a good idea. The best way would be to have short press to open the radio menu with correct PTT, while long press would be VoiP/Speech Recognition. Others have suggested this before me.

Absolutely. Best implementation would of course be some AI like ATCbeyond, that will trigger correctly even if the phrase is not 💯 accurate, like VAICOM/VoiceAttack needs today.

I'll have to try that! How do you select an item once highlighted?

You use the key/button you've bound to "comms menu select item" in UI layer. I use "trim right" for that.

Ah, so I would need a shift for that...

No, the comms menu (when open) overrides whatever the other bindings are.  So I have (in the F-18) my weapons selection up/down moves the comms menus up/down and depress enters, but if the comms menu isn't open it works normally as the weapon selection buttons.
