Ddg1500 Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Tomcat is like a Dodge Viper, very powerful, very fast, but not much safety, no FBW, no G limits, little glass cockpit. With some pretty analog fly control, it's clearly functional, but not very effective, and it's optional, you could switch it off if you want(just behind the throttle). Due to this reason, tomcat is pretty naughty at aerial refueling, precision control is HARD to say the least, and maintaining connected for long time is even harder. The fly control won't correct it for you if you oscillate, you would need a lot of hand + throttle work to correct that. Furthermore, due to the fact that there is no g limits, with a variable sweep wing mechanism, you could actually tear off the wing if pulled too hard. Overall, a pretty hardcore aircraft. 2

WarthogOsl Posted May 3 Posted May 3 If you don't have a stick extension, try refueling with the wings in bomb mode. It tends to be less pitch sensitive.

It's pretty much procedure for our squad to bring them back to bomb mode throughout form up/refueling/leaving.

Raven (Elysian Angel) Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Indeed, in other words: fun! Not as boring as a *yawn* Hornet *snore*. Easier to refuel than a Hornet and very stable on approach, much more rewarding in a dogfight, much more exciting kinematics and deadly in BVR Superb immersion too in familiar Heatblur fashion 4 Spoiler Ryzen 9 5900X | 64GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600 | Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super | ASUS ROG Strix X570-E GAMING | Samsung 990Pro 2TB + 960Pro 1TB NMVe | VR: Varjo Aero Pro Flight Trainer Puma | VIRPIL MT-50CM2 grip on VPForce Rhino with Z-curve extension | Virpil CM3 throttle | Virpil CP2 + 3 | FSSB R3L | VPC Rotor TCS Plus base with SharKa-50 grip | Everything mounted on Monstertech MFC-1 | TPR rudder pedals OpenXR | PD 1.0 | 100% render resolution | DCS graphics settings
Dragon1-1 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 (edited) I'm flying the Hornet campaigns now, and damn, I even miss that idiot in the back. Mostly analog flight controls, just enough displays to do the job, and you can foist some jobs on the backseater. The Phoenix feels more rewarding than the AMRAAM, too, it's more difficult to use while still keeping you on top of the food chain if you did figure it out. Edited May 6 by Dragon1-1

Phoenix is not so good against fighter, nearly every fighter in this game can shake it off easily
Dragon1-1 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 They work just fine against fighters if you shoot fairly late, leaving the missile with a lot of energy. This is part of the fun, you need to be aware of the ranges and decide whether to fire earlier and risk a miss, or fire late and risk being launched at before the missile goes active.
