I've just come across this picture of the B-2 captured by the Eurofighter's PIRATE IRST, does anyone know what range and altitude this picture was taken?.

For me it looks pretty close, however it can be futher than I think.

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D

Where did you find it? And how do you know it was PIRATE shooting that picture?

The link was sent to me in an email, I cannot confirm anything about this picture, only what I've been told in an email, so take it with a large pinch of salt. I forgot to put a "?" after the thread title.

How can you be sure PIRATE actually tracks it?!!

Might be a lucky snapshot or pilot manually aiming the sensor over the B-2?

With that contrast, it would be a very crappy system if it couldnt track it ;)

The range is whats most interesting, but I have a feeling we wont get that info.

The range is 'up close'.

I've heard of the Sniper pod tracking airliners 80nm away, but you have to find them first. They're also not aircraft that actually bother to supress their heat signature much - and of course, this is all very dependant on the weather.

I did and I'm glad we both agree that this pic can't be taken for granted. It can be crosshair overlay done with PS and not he actual PIRATE screenshot!

This image is approximately the same size as the FPA pixel capability permits - 640x480, and assuming a pod similar to the Sniper XR the field of regard is 4x4 deg WFOV and 1x1 NFOV. It appears that the image has been cropped to cut out the symbology.

In the WFOV case we're looking at about 1km distance or less, in the NFOV, about 3-3.5km.

I don't really know the symbology to tell you if its W/N, but if compared to symbology of certain other pods, this superficially appears to be WFOV.

Edit: It looks like I was right ...

The B-2 picture was taken at about half mile range from a Rapier FCS at 500 ft altitude back in Farnborough`96. Caused quite a stir but really inconsequential.

I remember that one too. It was all over the net: 'Rapier Battery tracks B-2' (incidentally, aircraft tend to be tracked after takeoff to check that the IFF is working).

Superb analysis.

I find it surprising that the heat signature on that B-2 is so unifom around the aircraft. Lends it toward a fake in my mind, but what do I know.

I keep thinking it's a grayscale photo edited in negative with crosshairs added over it. At least they could blur it a bit to make heat signature appear more spread and not so solid!

we know that f-22 wings are irrigated with fuel in key places, wich would result in uniform IR signature. Maybe B-2 does the same, also remenber the B-2 is firmly subsonic, friction heating is low, and the engines are hidden inside. Its possible.
