golfsierra2 Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 The current Starforce copy protection prevents activation on WinXP64. Installation of LockOn 1.00 and update on FC 1.1 was ok, but could not activate Starforce, making FC 1.1 unplayable on a WinXP64 system. My OS: WinXP64 Release Candidate 2 kind regards, Raven.... DayGlow Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 i'd contact SF tech support. My guess would be that it can't read a hardware profile because it wasn't designed to work with Win64 as it's not a comercial OS yet. aceflier Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Hmmm so what happens when xp64bit (longhorn) is released? We cant play lockon 1.1? All of these problems are really starting to bug me. And they all boiling down to 1 piece of added software. Shouldnt say I told ya so but, I told ya so. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

DayGlow Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 That's unfair, how is a software company supposed to predict future OS compatabilities? There is going to a lot more issues than this one when XP64/Longhorn comes out, just like there is with every new OS release. Just like there was when the switch from the Win95 core to the NT core in XP. Lots of games had issues. People don't complain that it's Janes'/EA's fault because JF/A-18 doesn't work under XP perfectly. aceflier Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 True Dayglow but we can still play janes f18 5 or 6 year later. Will said software even be around in 6 months? Not with this kinda press they wont. I went to ubi forums and put Starforce into the filter and there were 0 threads that it found. But, if you look at the forums that run this software there are 100's of posts about problems with it. Why has ubi filtered out the word if its reliable and wont effect sales? Makes you wonder or at least it does me. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Joe Kurr Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Incompatibility with XP64 because it isn't released yet isn't an excuse for lack of support by SF. There have been beta versions and release candidates for at least 8 months. I'd say they should have had enough time to at least have minimal support. Revvin Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Older games such as Janes F18 are still playable as they are games you can set them up to run in compatibility mode where as Starforce is a copy protection system that as part of it's function detects the OS you are running. WinXP64 is still not commercially available and with Microsoft's track record at changing things at the last minute why would Starforce waste their own resources writing in code to support such an OS that is not commercially available and subject to change when a small minority of gamers will be using it at this time? The forum search on the Ubi forums has been broken for a long time so I'd suggest putting the tin foil hat away as you won't be needing it just yet ;)
aceflier Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Tell that to the people in Sh3 month later after release and still cant play the game they paid for without a crack. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
W-Natas Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 But 64bit Prozessors are commercial.... and runs best with a 64bit Windows or Linux System ;) WinXP64 is already known... and Longhorn is the next step... SF should support Longhorn before it is released. This message was sponsored by "askingstupidquestions.com" in cooparation with "icantfly.de".

Win64 is not commercially available and even vendors such as ATi and nVidia struggled to provide stable drivers until recent months. There are many thousands of happy SHIII players, myself included who have had no problems with Starforce to date.
Guest ruggbutt Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 You run a beta operating system you have to expect some things not to work. I didn't upgrade to a 64 bit OS because I don't like being forced to choose between one (maybe two) drivers for my hardware. That's part of the game if you use technology that isn't in the mainstream yet. Most software developers have a hard enuf time fixing bugs in current operating systems. I remember hearing all the Win '98 people complaining that LOMAC won't play on their outdates OS's. There comes a point where you have to move on.

Allochtoon Posted April 9, 2005 Posted April 9, 2005 Comeone people. Can anyone give me one good reason why when Longhorn comes out everyone has to run it? Let alone play a game on it which was not programmed for it, although MS states it can even run DOS programs, i highly doubt the backwards compatibility of the OS. All that hassle for a new skin, a "new" filesystem, and a 3d workspace. And it even makes your games run slower because all the crap it loads up, not to mention cpu cycles. Still im quite impressed with the propaganda machine which still seems to work well. Amen to that.
