Hi. I'm new. Just trying to get me head across BS...amazing sim. How does this trim work? I've downloaded Viper - Ala 13's Cougar profile...but not sure how the trim works...explanation in profile is confusing. Do I need to move the joystick to the position, hit trim and holsing trim, re center the stick and let go of the trim button? Is that it? What's this 'in BS trim' VERSUS 'Cougar trim' that I see being talked about? Grateful people point me to previous threads if they exist... tks.

Hit trim and hold it, move joystick, release trim, center the joystick. In this order. If you use old trim method (without checkmark in options) you have to recenter quickly or your trimming will be way off. If you use new trim (with checkmark in options) you can recenter quickly or slowly, however you must do it precisely, because after you release trim you will loose control until stick is centered (you must get joystick into predefined travel zone for joystick to be considered centered).

The trim is both trim and the Auto Pilot, which makes it really weird at first. Any time you do anything you need to hit the trim button. Change direction, altitude, speed, etc, hit the trim. People have different methods but the one that works best for me is to move the helicopter into the position I want it it then click the trim. Sometimes I have to click several times. So if I want to turn 180 degrees, I start banking the copter, trim, maybe bank some more, trim, etc until I'm about to finish the turn, then it's slowly correct the copter, trim, etc until I've completed the turn. I also use the old method (no check mark I think?) because it doesn't require your stick to be recentered. This is because when I tried the new method, I ended up doing some crazy stuff like flying sideways at 100 k/h before flipping upside down and exploding. I just don't feel comfortable with that mode.

In any case getting used to the AP takes time but after a while it's like second nature. Used to be I'd fly like I was on a roller coaster, now I can lift off, turn, get moving, set my AP and fly hands free towards my destination. Oh, there's that FD button by the autopilot buttons, if you hit that then the AP will only stabilize your copter rather than try to run it. This is nice for strafing or any time you need to do fancy maneuvers. I also use it a lot for landing because I've never been patient enough to plot my course out before I hit the ground. I like to fly in fast, pull up and drop collective to stop then slowly move in rather than prepare for landing 10 k out or whatever.

Hope this helps. Best thing to do is just make a quick level where you start up and take off. Just fly around for a bit and get used to the controls. Maybe even toss in a few targets that won't shoot back so you have something to fly too, then try blowing 'em up!

Look...I'd just like to thank all those who provided advice...much apreciated. I shall keep practising. Can anyone recommend a good online squandron I can join so I can get some instruction?

159th tend to be nice people, my experience of their server(s) is that if you hop in there and have questions, they'll be nice and help you out even if you're not a member. Obviously though, not being a member does preclude entry to their dedicated training events. :P

Hey all,

Been getting back into DCS after a bit of a break and the purchase of a new computer....so, the new trim system in, well, new.

So, is it correct then to press and hold the trim WHILE you are turning...then, when you're done the turn and flying straight and level to then release?

...seems like there are lots of ways of turning the aircraft, including the producer notes/videos in which it seems he does not press/hold while making turns. I find that a bit difficult as I seem to be fighting the aircraft more, but it seems to be the way to go when getting into a hover.

...thoughts?

That is the way I have been doing it, when I start a turn I first press and hold the trim, and keep holding until I have completed the turn and then release it... seems to work fairly well for me.

As long as it gets you where you're going without crashing any method is the right method! I've been doing the trim, bank, trim, turn, even out, trim method of turning. It takes time to get used to but it works pretty well. You have to get just the right amount of bank and click the trim quick before the ap starts fighting back.
