Hey guys

Its quite simple and I have done a fair amount of research on this however it seems I am at a dead end. The problem is Starfox, anti piracy software needed to run flaming cliffs, does not want to run on windows 7 (not beta, retail home pri).

I have looked at the starfox site and they basicaly say they have no way of getting it to work on older versions of starfox because they dont have the permision or licencing from the game manufacturers they support. Their solution is to install the game on an older version of windows.

Now thats fine, I guess I can do that, however it bugs me that they are limiting me to a certan era of operating system. Also, I dont really want to run dual os's again as its going to be a pain to have a whole os dedicated to one game.

Im well aware that perhapse I need to purchase another copy from your website. I dont mind doing this, but that wont fix the problem...I still wont be able to install the game on windows 7 because of this starforce ****.

Can someone please post a solution or go around =S

Thanks.

According to this announcement by wags

Lock On: Flaming Cliffs. As mentioned in the last update, we are working on a further evolution of this product line.

there is going to be some sort of patch. I expect that this would inlcude support for newer OSs.

The bad news is that there is no time frame for release, but i'm going to take a leap of faith and say early next year.

You have to update starforce drivers to make SF work with new OS. Download and install this file:

http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvup.zip

Be sure to patch to new version and if available run LO in compatibilty mode.

Some people on this forum reported that it only worked for a limited period of time.

IMHO this is not a very good advertisement for SF, especially looking at the long-termed development of DCS...

I'm running LOFC on windows 7. This is what I did:

installed LO

patched to 1.02

installed FC

updated SF (win7: says SF drivers not compatible with win7)

update to 1.2b (win7 still says drivers are not ok, update SF again, same)

but game works

did it too, but here, when I launch the game, starforce tells me that it has to restart windows to load the driver, and as on startup the driver isn't loaded (win7 doesn't want it), I'm back to the starting point. I guess I'll have to wait 'till the update by ED

yes i had the loop also but i just ignored the warning from win 7 and could start the game.

hmm ..i run windows 7 professional, but this shouldn't be an issue.

.. i searched a lot to find this link where it is explicitly explained: check also maybe the exact procedure (order) is important

good luck

I just installed the LO + FC - worked flawless.

I installed both normally, patched and ran the sf-driver-update. Done.

Maybe you should switch off user-management and/or Windows-Defender for the installation at least (and don't forget to restart after making these changes).

my UAC is switched of from the beginning

windows defender same...

I gave it another try, and this time it went on flawlessly too.... no idea what happened.

only glitch, my external hard drive wouldn't be recognised anymore...

had to go out, and when I came back, it worked again.

basically, I tried to use it on win7 since last february, on numerous occasions, with compatibility modes, everything.. it never did... and today, it just went through withtout a glitch (not even a windows refusal for incompatible driver.. nothing. don't ask me what happened.. I don't have the faintest idea.. and I've been working on computers for about 13 years now...

go figure... ;)

Well, it's windows after all, so the old method still works:

If you have a problem: Restart and try again.

Wow, very interesting.

Good to hear a patch is on the way it seems looking over the SF topic, alot of people have had no responce from the much larger game developers, good to hear our developers acctualy care.

Ill try again, see how we go. Im stuck at the restart to install sf part, i have tried the updates and even the SF update does the same loop so im thinking it might have something to do with the version of windows 7? im using Home premium as mentioned.

Cheers for the responces and the thread move by the admin, I did have a look around but being new to the forum i chose to take a stab in the dark.

Ill keep browsing the forums to see what sucsess people have as more people move to windows 7

Thanks again guys.

here's what I did step by step:

- install lock on (in default folder)

first, don't lanch autorun automatically. open the folder (cd), right click on autorun.exe, select Compatibility tab, once there, select win xp SP3 compatibility mode and check the box to run that file as administrator. only after that launch the application by double-clicking on it.

when it's over:

- install flaming cliffs

same thing as lock on install: you refuse the autrun automatic start, go on the CD and select compatibility mode (XP SP3) and run as admin

once it's finished

- install patch 1.12b

same again, compatibility mode and run as admin. For some reason it wants to install to "Eagle Dynam" folder instead of the game one. just let it go and then copy the contents c:\program files\eagle dynam folder to the good one (eagle dynamics\Lock On\ )

- reboot when required when you launch the game first time.

- ignore the message about driver no compatible if you get one (I didn't even get that)

- update starforce with the update utility from their site

maybe it work for you that way too
