Caserock Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I've been flying sims since Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe came out. I've spent way too many hours of my life playing around with these things. I haven't flown a helicopter sim since GUNSHIP 2000 (read: early 90s), and I was like 9 or 10 years old then. I'm pretty used to complicated sims, but I think its the mechanics of flight with a helicopter that are really throwing me for a loop. Back in Gunship, it was basically up and down, left and right. So, obviously flying an accurately modeled helicopter is freaking me out. I'm brand new to this community, but not new to simming in general. I know that in many other sims I play, the communities are amazingly supportive. I'm wondering if there are any squads or individuals out there that enjoy training newbies. I'll be a quick learner because I'm familiar with flight sims, I just really need someone to show me the ropes rather than just following along with a manual or going through the in-game training. Any advice?
MadTommy Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 (edited) Have a look here, you can get the 'producer's notes'. Very useful videos that show you the main features, i found them much better than the official training. A must watch when learning. You can get them on youtube too, but the quality is not the same. Caserock Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 Thanks, Tommy I'll give them a shot.
26-J39 Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Welcome to DCS Caserock.. I'm sure you will find this forum helpful for any information you need. ;) DCS Blackshark is in such detail that it can be very overwhelming at first especially if you don't know much about helicopters.. Be patient/practice, it's a constant learning process with such a high fidelity sim :) Have fun.. Cheers:D
stevie52 Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Hi Caserock, Welcome to DCS. I could only suggest hooking up with a squad. I'd be happy to saddle up some time, walking through some of the basic stuff to get you going. cheers and enjoy your stay
dooom Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Welcome to the community! Great forums here to find what you look for. Do your due diligence where you can and seek answers in manual first - some folks around here can be a tad sparky on what they see as silly questions - ignore them. The forum has a good search function though and many are more than willing to offer quick tips here and there. I really suggest checking out the Wiki: http://en.wiki.eagle.ru/wiki/Resources_for_New_Pilots It has much of the basics you need in the page above and has helped others i introduced to the sim get up and running rather quickly. good luck and have fun!:smilewink: ASUS Tuf Gaming Pro x570 / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @ 3.8 / XFX Radeon 6900 XT / 64 GB DDR4 3200 "This was not in the Manual I did not read", cried the Noob" - BMBM, WWIIOL
Tbag Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Check these articles out, they are great to get a good understanding of the KA50s flight characteristics: http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_426a.html "Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so." - Douglas Adams
Caserock Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 Thanks guys! Looks like I'll be busy for a while. I spent a while last night trying to find some information about basic attack helicopter tactics. Definitely ran into a brick wall. Anyone have any links? There are tons of maneuvers and principles for fixed-wing combat. I'm suspecting there is an equivalent for helicopter combat. I found this: http://realandsimulatedwars.yolasite.com/dcs-black-shark-tactics-primer.php anyone have any further info?

I have found you have to search the forums for the best info and be specific - i.e. using a straffing attack on soft targets - how to engage mi24 etc... the threads can get quite informative - typically many means to an end. RichardG Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 Read the procedure checklists in the back of the manual.
Tbag Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 There was an attack helicopter tactics manual going around at some point, try searching the forums "Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so." - Douglas Adams
Caserock Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Thanks again, guys. Tbag, I think I found the manual you were talking about. I think I've got a good primer on tactics. Now I'm just learning to hover! :D
