Interesting place to set up a test flight base, with all the clouds and haze I am sure it is easy to conceal something like the J-20 from spy satellites. Of course a test flight would be more convenient in a desert area with little to no cloud cover like Edwards AFB.

I don't think clouds and haze matter anymore to conceal anything!

there's a big chance that the first flight is tomorrow (Jan 11th).However I have a important test tomorrow so maybe I can't translate the live feed by then, but I will try my best to deliver the latest news

Posted

It is a big risk to have a very first flight broadcasted live. It is either that this is not the very first flight or again, they are taking a big risk.

I would say test flying a prototype under any circumstances is dangerous. Nothing is more humiliating than a crash as we saw with the YF-22 in 1992. I'm sure with China's obsession with saving face they want to get this done right. I also wouldn't doubt that the plane has flown before and that this test flight will be a somewhat staged airshow.

On last picture you can see how tiny these engines are compared to whole aircraft. I wonder about performance of this plane. Does;nt look too agile, or maybe Chinese found solution how to squize out a lot of thrust from small engine.

We assume its the Al-31 engine or a clone/derivative. Acceleration and Top speed won't be stellar considering the size of the beast plus draggy canards plus any restrictions on the intake. Then again some would say that its role will be long range strike and penetration.

the 16000daN class engine WS-15 is still testing, EF2000 also used RB199 for its first flight

Eurofighter took off for the first time in 1994 and production began in 2003, so what you suggest is at least few years before J-20 becomes final product. Considering financial resources China have at it disposal, its gonna happen quicker than in EF case, but still we are looking at years in front. Surely J-20 will be a factor to fasten development of other constructions, such as F-35 and pak-fa, but future only will show if they all at the sme level of technology, or just look V-th gen.

Yep, first flight is just a milestone. To be honest, it took USA 15 years form the first flight of YF-22 to F-22A achieves IOC, I won't expect China goes any faster than USA. Although I hope J-20 can achievs IOC by the year 2018, cause according to the latest timetable, WS-15 engine can be operated about in 5 or 6 years, and PL-21 long range missile can catch up with the plane.(PL-10 short range missile is already operational)

Chinas plane clearly reflect a completely different filosophy than Russians and probably requirments too, what that is exactly we still dont know, although plausible hypothesis has been placed on this thread.

I say Chinas own low RCS version of the strike eagle. The next stealth project the chinese are working on is alegelly a defense fighter.

Take off profile seemed to be very conservative, thus no need for afterburners. I assume the airplane was nor fully fueled up either.

I would say the same thing. On these test flights they don't want the jet fully fueled up. Another thing is these flights are the normal flights and don't last as long, thus no need to fully fuel it up.
