I would like to play a few missions with a friend of mine only as a 2 ship, is this possible and how exactly or do I need to have my own server? thanks in advance.

I haven't done this myself but this is how I imagine it'd work. First create the mission you want to fly Co-op in. Second the person with the better Internet connection would start the multiplayer BS and act as the server loading that mission. It might be an idea to password protect the server so only the people you want can join.

Then the other player would find that server in the multiplayer server browser, and the join like any other MP game.

The person hosting the game will also need to ensure that the correct ports are open/forwarded in the router configuration. The default ports are 10308 UDP and TCP

You can also use Himachi (free download).

You start multiplayer as the server and your friend starts multiplayer as client and enters your Himachi IP. Works great.

If you just want the 2 of you to play in the mission, then the host just needs to add a password and tell your friend the password. Then only you two will be able to get in.

Note about 2-ship:

If it's a mission you are designing yourself, do NOT, I repeat do NOT, place the flight in the editor as a two-ship. You need to place two separate one-ships and give them the same flight plan.

So instead of the "offline version" of:

Flight 1:

Unit 1: "Player"

Unit 2: "Good" (AI skill level)

You go:

Flight 1:

Unit 1: "Client"

Flight 2:

Unit 1: "Client"

This does mean that you need to set up your comm radios appropriately to get your datalinks to work, but it is hard to avoid this issue for technical reasons.
