RvEYoda Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Currently my fc2 fps is limited by my GPU, so I need to upgrade, but I don't know what to pick. I'm looking for advice if anyone knows which one of these monsters could run DCS/FC2 the fastest: Whether to buy the HD5870 or GTX480 I also program some OpenCL and ATi's support in there is rather crappy(they haven't implemented the entire OpenCL specification yet for example) so I'm leaning towards nvidia, but I have not made up my mind yet. Looking for suggestions. Has anybody compared HD5870 vs HD4870 in FC2 or DCS? What was your take of it? Does anyone know if FC2/DCS supports crossfire/the equivalent for the 5970? (I dont want to buy a 5970 and find out it runs like a 5870 :)) Edited March 27, 2010 by =RvE=Yoda S = SPARSE(m,n) abbreviates SPARSE([],[],[],m,n,0). Here's a good article that may help you make your decission: GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470: 6 Months Late, Was It Worth the Wait? RvEYoda Posted March 27, 2010 Author Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Hehe, but it doesn't matter if we had to wait does it? It only matters what is best now :) But the review at anandtech looks really nice. 480 is kickin 5870 in the ****, and I guess the 5970 wont help for FC2/DCS or can DCS do crossfire? Couple of things, firstly I just went to the link and got a virus threat warning, so I wouldn't advise anyone try it. Secondly, my new rig is arriving today, similar to your setup (but using i7 930 overclocked to 4Ghz), I was wondering what sort of performance/fps you're getting.
Rikus Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Yoda, GTX 470 is your card. 480 is very very hot, around 100-103º and we are still on spring!! http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-470-480-review/1 http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1360/480vs5870final.png Greetings
Boulund Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I'm in the same predicament. I enjoy the great linux support and also the possibility of programming with CUDA. But seeing the price/performance ratio for the different cards I really don't know what to do. Think I'll hang on for a while and then go for nVidia in the end anyway. I like the possibilites for 3D vision, CUDA, OpenCL and linux! Ok....this is bad......I really need to see a DCS/Fc2 test before I decide which one to buy EDIT 2: the 480 seems too loud...makes me think of the old nvidia 5 series ;) Edited March 27, 2010 by =RvE=Yoda S = SPARSE(m,n) abbreviates SPARSE([],[],[],m,n,0). Axion Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) I'm running a ATI 5970, no difference in crossfire from what I can tell which is pretty much what I expected. From what I have read those new Fermi cards run extremely hot and consume a lot of power. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18129511 Edited March 27, 2010 by Axion Asus Z390 Code XI, i9-9900K, RAM 32 Gig Corsair Vengeance @ 3200, RTX 2080 TI FE, TIR 5, Samsung 970 EVO 1TB, HOTAS WH, ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, HTC Vive Pro, Win 10 x64
mrbinkels Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Also there is a 5870 2gb version coming shortly. Not necessarily for the eyefinity aspects of it, but the extra ram might help(other games). When I first post the link, I screwed up html tags. I corrected it since. Anandtech is very respectfull and well known computer and technology site. BTW, when I click on a link, I am not getting any virus thret warnings. Secondly, my new rig is arriving today, similar to your setup (but using i7 930 overclocked to 4Ghz), I was wondering what sort of performance/fps you're getting.I haven't had a chance benchmarking my rig yet. I was too busy playing ... Anyway, I purchased the 3D Mark Vantage an did a quick first test and obtained 10243 points on it. I am planning on a little more serious FC and BS benchmarking in few weeks with stock CPU speed and will try the same with overcloacked CPU. JG27_Arklight Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) You should probably give this a go too. http://hardocp.com/article/2010/03/26/nvidia_fermi_gtx_470_480_sli_review ^^ Read this. IMO, there is nobody better at GPU reviews with regards to gaming. Personally, I would skip the GTX 470 and GTX 480. Both consume way too much power for what you get. If I was looking at the GTX 470, I would got for the ATI 5850. With regards to the GTX 480, I would wait for the 2GB version of the ATI 5870 which should be popping up within the ext few weeks. The current 5870 performs almost as well as the GTX 480 in most games, and those it loses too it does not lose by much at all. Meantime, the GTX 480 is consuming almost 2x the power and it costs more. 1 GTX 480 consumes more power than 2 ATI 5870s in CFX. From a price to power to performance perspective, the new GTX cards fall on their face. I would lean toward ATI card, Nvidia has been frying their own Nvidia card lately. That was a issue with 1 driver. That problem has since been resolved and is no longer an issue at all.
