Having used both ATI and nVidia videocards over the years (and 3Dfx century's ago), i found ATI to deliver the best general image quality, certainly when it comes down to shimmering. This is only my opinion and i'm not willing to start an ATI vs nVidia discussion. Both have their pro's and con's and the last time i made the change from ATI to nVidia is because i had flickering black triangles in certain sims (FSX and LockOn) when sitting on the runway. By switching to nVidia, these problems got solved but i got shimmering in return. When i returned to nVidia i directly remembered why i made the switch to ATI before. The difference in shimmering on both brands was hugh. ATI had delivered as good as no shimmering at all while nVidia shimmered the hell out of my display, at some settings so bad that i was affraid that my monitor would shake off of my desk...

By playing around with the card settings (AA, AF etc...) i could eliminate most of this shimmering and get a decent image quality.

- LockOn FC1.x is a good example. Shimmers like hell on default settings but with some "advanced" settings, 90% of the shimmering is gone.

- In FSX on the other hand, i can reduce around 50% of the shimmering but at least one can see the difference to standard and advanced settings. Also, i could eliminate more shimmer under XP then i can under Windows 7.

- Same for Black Shark, i could never reduce the shimmering to an acceptable level and got stuck at around 50% (always compared to the standard game settings).

- In LockOn FC2.0 i can't eliminate non of the shimmering whatsoever. I tried about every setting, single and combined i could make (and that are a lot of possiblity's) but never i saw a gain in image quality at all. None!! Same goes for the jaggies on the edges, almost non present in FC1.x after teweaking the settings, always clearly present in FC2.0 no matter what setting i use.

Now i'm still using older drivers (182.50) which are the only ones to solve another problem but i tried a few and also the latest (197.13) without any succes. Even with 197.13, none of the shimmering went away. In fact, even with these latest drivers, i see no difference at all, on whatever setting, or combined setting, i try. Something ain't working correctly but i don't know what, i've run out of my bag of solutions.

Question: Is there anyone else outhere who has/had the same experience and got it fixed? If yes, how?

PS: If not, i'm thinking of making the switch to ATI again (i'm almost at the end of this setup anyway: E6600 dual core CPU with 4GB Ram + nVidia 8800 GTS 640 MB Ram) but i did read that there are still quite some issues with their 5xxx series of cards (i'm eyeballing an 5870) so i've put the upgrade on hold for the moment.

Bump...

Either nobody has shimmering with a nVidia card (or even ATI) or nobody got it fixed?

But in this threath: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=52062 on page 2 i read:

You know, whats even more strange I have noticed.....It seems that AA has no effect in this game no matter what I set it to in the NV control panel. I can set it to 2x or 16xQ and it looks the same....still jagged as ever. I'm not sure if maybe this has something to do with it? Not sure, just wish I could figure it out.

Thanks again, still trying away.....

Different card, different setup but same problem so...

AA works perfectly for me - I run at 8x for both AA and AF through tyhe nVidia panel.

Are you sure you have pointed the settings to the right file? simulator.exe is the one you want to point to. Might also ensure that it's set to actually override the application setting.

Having the game full screen but with Full Screen unchecked doesn't let me fix shimmering or jaggies.

Make sure you have Full Screen checked. Most of the nvidia settings on my 275 card don't have any effect unless I do that.

This is happening to me using an HD5850 (bought 2 days ago, still no fun). I had an 9800GTX+ before, with no shimmering at all. Tried every possible combination in Catalyst 10.6... if you can point me some tips on making this ATI work without shimmering, I would appreciate. Missing my nVidia.

It might be related to the cloud shadows. It always seems to point to that. Try this modman pack: http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules/Downloads/fileuploads/NoCloudShadows.zip
