Invisible SAMs?

I have been flying the opening A-10 campaign missions and while on route to target I recently had a few SAM launches at me. I knew the direction of the threat from the RWR, and would always beam the incoming missile, but I would never see it until it exploded. Often I would see it explode as a fireball short of my plane as I remained on the edge/outside the SAM envelope, but I would never see a smoke trail and/or the incoming missile.

Generally in my experience, unless you spot the launch you have no hope of seeing the missile. You must then estimate the position and try to evade accordingly.

Right, it's like golf balls. If you didn't follow the ball from the tee off, there's no way of spotting it in the sky.

Also, remember that there's only a smoke trail while the motor is burning - and it only burns for a couple seconds. Time of burn varies with type though, of course.

I rarely see them, unless they're launched at my 12 and im dealing with a short/medium range sams's, often I won't stick around to find it. Rather spend my time wasting the missile's energy.

 

It's those pesky ir SAMs/manpads that grind my gears :)

Every so often you get lucky and spot the pesky buggers In-Flight, especially so with the Snow-Drift....Downside is that you have about a tenth of a second to admire the view before you're unceremoniously dumped to Map-View.

 

Novel while it lasts, though.....Everything from 'WTF' to 'Would you look at that' to 'This is gonna hurt' to 'OhFcukItAll' in the Blink of an Eye :D
