Fiddlestx Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hi guys, I have an old version of Lock-On Gold from ages ago when I bought a previous computer from Dell. I would like to buy FC2 but I have heard that the the particular version of Starforce in use on the lock-on gold disc has a tendency to destroy cd/dvd-r drives. Is this true? If so i will go through the motions of buying a different copy. The last thing that I want to do is destroy my dvd-r drive. Thank you, Fiddlestx
ShadowVonChadwick Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) I have never heard of this myself ?? You only need the disc for one install & then back in the draw. But they are selling a package I believe relatively cheap. Some one might have a definite answer for you. PS their Selling LockOn Gold + FC in store here..... Did find this .... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=9506 Cheers Edited April 23, 2010 by ShadowVonChadwick RyZen5 3600x, MSI GamingX RX 5700xt, AX-370-K7, 16 Gig G-Skil 3200 , Antec 650w (Still),Win10 on 256G 870 NVMe, 860+850 Evo for Apps, 2x1TB WD HDs for :music_whistling:, TR5 :detective:, Hog stick:joystick:, 3x TM MFD Bezels. a 32" AOC, @ 2560x1440, no floppy & a crappy chair :pain:. Sinner6 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Obviously, not a problem, unless you let unfounded fears cause you miss out on something this good.
Sarge55 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I have Lock On Gold and didn't have any issues with Starforce eating the CD drive. In this case though, the good thing is you only have to install the 1.0 version of LOMAC which didn't have Starforce, then go straight to FC2. After which you can uninstall 1.0. Thank you, Fiddlestx You have LockOn Gold, ie a set of 2 Discs: LockOn Modern Air Combat Disc#1 (No Starforce Drivers) and LockOn Flaming Cliffs Add-On Disc#2 (Starforce Drivers). As Sarge stated above, insofar as LockOn 2.0 is concerned, you only need a preliminary install of Disc#1 as above (ie sans Starforce). Subsequent to the 1.0 install, Install 2.0 (effectively a standalone). Once installed, you can uninstall 1.0 in it's entirety. LockOn Flaming Cliffs (Disc#2) is skipped in it's entirety and together with it the Starforce drivers as per your post - iow you have nothing to worry about :) Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? rattler Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Just a note. I have had the original cd Lockon and then lockon gold when FC became available(2 disc set). I never had a problem with starforce until I tried to make a backup copy of Lockon Gold disc's as you need to put 2nd disc in every 7 days. I lost my new DVD/rw. That said, I went back to the original but was lured back to Fc1 for what was being provided.(mods and Patched). I have had Fc1 on my machine now for several years and have not had any issues with starforce BUT I have not tried to make a copy of the disc's. This may not have anything to do with losing disc drive, then again other people had issues when trying to make copies of the discs. I would not worry about starforce, go ahead and get it, as a precaution only, do not try to back up the discs. IMHO, This my have been the cause of my problem and then again maybe not. FC2 will have no problem with starforce at all from what I understand. Hope this helps. cheers.
rockyalexander Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 After installing Lockon Gold my drive didn't work for months, well, it wouldn't read any disc other than Lockon, that is. Then a few weeks ago I popped in a driver disc for my printer, and the drive managed to read it. It also allowed me to install the Control Manager software for my Fighterstick last week, so it seems to be working randomly now.
